I have lurked and studied this site for about a year now, and I have to say that it has been invaluable to me. For this; I thank the community for sharing and pooling their knowledge!

That Being said; I learned of this site last year while hunting for Halloween costume ideas. I stumbled upon several references to foam builds, and I just happened to have some lying around. I gave it a try, and built a custom suit last year that was a big hit.

This year, I prep for my first Comicon in about 20 years!
I did 15 years in the Army, so I lost my love a little due to bigger distractions.

This year, I wanna do DOOM, so here's my starting point: The helmet.

This was my first pepakura build, and I have to give credit to anyone who does this stuff regularly. It's a challenge!

I've been using Sculpey since before my time in the Army, and working in paper was far more laborious!

Anyways; Here's my first build. I'll post updates as I progress...

I've been looking at doing a Doc Doom pep build myself, can't wait to see how yours comes along.

And don't forget to yell RIIIIIICCCHHHHARRRDSSS! when you're done!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

That's lookin good dude nice job! Do you have a link to the pep file? I would like to have a go at this and modify it abit into a Captain Britain helmet, it is almost the same if you remove a few pieces from around the mouth area and fill in the indentations on the head area.... I am hvin one made but would like to have a mess with this in the meantime, cheers

I got the pep file from this site. It's pulled from a recent video game. Marvel vs. Capcom, maybe?
I'll find it for you when I get the chance, if you have problems finding it..

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Ok dude I will have a search when I get on my laptop but if not I will let you know :) thnx

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

I can't seem to find it mate, the one I did find says it's been removed or deleted so if you can help me out that would be awesome, cheers ;)

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

You sir are a legend! Thank you :)

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

This looks great. I'm a 7 yr Army vet myself, so I have much respect for you....the Army can be - challenging. I'm working on Loki and Iron Man for my kids, so we are in the same Marvel Universe. I look forward to seeing your updates.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Finally got around to throwing a first coat of resin on the outside of this thing...
I went pretty light, and the resin hardened before I got it on as thick as I wanted. I'll do a second coat tomorrow, in smaller batches :p

As a side note, I found someone to sew for me, so I should be picking up my cape and tunic supplies tomorrow. Along with my sketched design, she should be able to hook me up!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

That's a pretty good looking Doom. I've yet to see one I actually like. I'm old school and like the classic Doom. Like the one Bob Layton drew in Iron Man. This looks good though. Nice job with the pep too.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

That's looking good man. So you're going for the whole head mask. I was planning on just doing the face.

That pepped version looks good

Yeah; I think it will make things easier in the long run. Figuring out a way to wear the mask as a facepiece alone, without it looking like a cheap Halloween mask, seemed like more of a challenge than making the whole head.

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Second coat of resin done.

I'm moving onto the interior fiberglassing, and I have a question:

This is my first time doing fiberglass as well (A lot of "virgin" territory on this build :p)

Would it be easiest to fiberglass over everything (eyes, nose, mouth and cheeks) and just cut them out after the fact? I would think this would be preferred, but I'd like a confirmation or some advice before I start laying matting. I already learned the hard way that 3 ounces of resin at a time is probably the best operating quantity for me, as I threw out a 3 ounce cup of rock last night.

I got the weaved fiberglass matting, as it looked cleaner and hopefully better to work with.

Any advice would be great!

Here's some progress shots:

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Also purchased my cloth for the cape and tunic.
114 bucks! Ouch!

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

You can easily cut the matting into smaller piecesbefore applying so you should be able to fit it in all the small areas and save yourself the headache of trying to cut it out afterwards. Just my $0.02

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

I'm just looking to optimize working time for the resin. It's a matter of seconds between workable and brick!

I suppose I can do the large surface areas first, then lay smaller pieces after..
How many layers of fiberglass are recommended? 2 or 3?

Re: First intro; first build! Dr. Doom Pepakura

Tasty burger...the quickest and easiest way of fiberglassing I've found is this.

First, get yourself one of these. http://ak.buy.com/PI/0/1000/217367695.jpg

Next, cut a whole bunch of fiberglass cloth.

Get some quick tack adhesive spray from a craft store. Spray a bit inside where you want the fiberglass to be. Stick the fiberglass cloth inside. Pour resin in, smooth out any air bubbles with a popsicle stick Do this part in smart batches.

Easy peasy.

That is an excellent idea! I could have all the matting in place before the first batch of resin goes in..

This may be the way I do it!

I may still brush the resin in, though. I like having control of where it goes.

UPDATE:
I started fiberglassing tonight. The technique you suggested works great!
I had some old metal leafing spray adhesive, which has a 2 minute set time, and remains tacky for a day or two. It's perfect for prelaying the matting.

I did two ounce batches, and it took about 6 ounces to completely resin the "dome".
I still have to glass and resin the face, which I will do tomorrow.

Honestly, there may be some air trapped in a few odd spots, but I'll deal accordingly if it becomes an issue. I'm not sure if I'll do another fiberglass coating, or just more resin. It will depend on the final rigidity of the whole helmet. It doesn't have to stop a bullet, but I don't want it to crack!
