Firefly , Mal Reynolds questions.

Is this better?

No comments? I've gone ahead and made the new right boot ribs, I just have to skive the ends to be more streamlined. In a few days I should get the liner leather for the boots and they should move pretty quickly from there. I also went to Tandy and picked up the last of the supplies I need to finish the holster and the owner of the store is looking into some good deer skin for when the time comes to make the browncoat.

After two attempts with very expensive leather to cut a liner piece that fits the inside of the bucket, only to find that the gun can barely fit with the liner in, I'm starting to adopt a ***-it-all attitude with this holster. It hasn't scraped any paint off my gun yet, so I think I'm just going to slick the inside really well and choose not to line it. Is it screen accurate? No. Is it at least as good as the QMx holster? Yes.

At the rate things are going, I'll be able to finish the holster by the end of the week and the boots by the end of the next.

I feel a bit like I'm hijacking this thread, so sorry for that. I'm starting my own overdue build thread and I'll be posting my progress over there.

Hello everyone, i spend long time looking for a good costume of Mal Reynolds, i look several pages and i still lost.
I have found the Boots, and the pants, but i´m still looking for the Shirt, and the hoster for the gun, can anyone give me a hand plz. :)

Thanks a lot

well my first thought, even though you are posting in a Firefly thread, is which version of Malcolm are you pursuing... Firefly or Serenity. That will determine what type of shirt, holster, and gun you need to be looking for.

Since this thread has been revived, i guess I'll ask a question too. Does anyone know if there is an "affordable" place to buy a good pair of Mal style boots? I'd like to do something a bit better than the Jedi boot option that I've seen, but I may end up going that route. Or even buying two pairs and trying to mod one with the ribs on the outside and some of the extra leather strip detailing. Has anyone tried this?

So far, I've ruled out MotorCowboy. Their pair is way too expensive to buy considering they really aren't even accurate at all.

I've also contacted Shrader boots as Bronson BB suggested in a couple of threads, and while I like what I see from Bronson's pics, Shrader quoted me $475 for the boots today. That's simply too much for a pair of boots for me.

The option I was excited about was The Leather Boutique, out of some South American country, who apparently had a decent price on custom Mal boots and used to do a lot on eBay. I've seen a couple pics and while they aren't that accurate, it definitely would've seperated those boots from the typical Jedi ones. Unfortunately, I've been told (and seen, really) that he (Carlos?) essentially disappeared from existence and no one has heard from him in a couple years.

Anyway, if anyone knows of a way to get a decent pair of boots for a reasonable price, it would be great to hear. (And, Risu, if you read this I'm still considering your spat offer. I'm just struggling to find a decent pair of base shoes. :))

Any ideas on a facsimile of Mal's boots? I'm wondering if there is an affordable option somewhere between Jedi boots and Shrader/Motorcowboy. Any ideas on custom boot people out there with affordable prices.

I'm also still trying to find a base pair of shoes similar to what Risu found, but having little luck.

Just an observation. I was rummaging through my closet and I noticed a pair of dress shoes I bought for an outdoor wedding at Payless in 2008 or 2009. The brand was State Street and I think the model of the shoe is 56769. The soles look a lot like the soles on Mal's boots. The shoes were about $15-$20. This may have become a new project for me to make Mal's boots.

Those soles seem to get around a bit. They're the same as the ones on my Steve Madden Crown shoes I used to build my first pair of boots. Unfortunately they lack the exact shape and the two-tone rubber. I was able to find a very close sole match though on a pair of Mephisto Spinnakers.

I know the original question is a bit old but I did not notice a proper answer. But Corded is corduroy. My grandmother who has been a seamstress for almost 40 years still calls it corded velveteen or Manchester cloth.

Well they make "Tan" RIT dye, that is very close to the color of those pants. I would guess, if you dyed the grosgrain, with that, it would make the white part tan, and the brown parts, a darker, richer, brown. (though you certainly should try it on a small piece first. )

And thanks for posting the info, on where to get some, I do believe I'll pick some up myself. :)

I found some 1" 6 stripe silver and white. Would that dye the right color? The only other color that might work is black and white. It also comes in several other colors. Maybe one of them would work. I would appreciate opinions.

Rit washes out of grosgrain pretty quickly. It also stains anything it comes into prolonged contact with, say if you fold the pants.

I lucked out and found a 100% cotton grosgrain in brown and white stripes, that I then lightly dyed brown. Took many hours/days of searching on eBay before I found it.

Pretty sure I used some variation of striped cotton grosgrain or something like that. I can't seem to find what's left of the original, but here's a photo of the dyed ribbon I used for my pants (this required several dye and diluted bleach baths to get the colour just right).

That looks to be sawtooth edge cotton/rayon Petersham ribbon rather than grosgrain. If Shawna was right about grosgrain though, the edges had to have been wrapped in some kind of folded bias tape, because the material just isn't thick enough on its own.
