Besson is not planning a sequel to The 5th Element, rather a film adaptation of VALERIAN, a very popular SciFi Bande Dessinée series by Mézières & Christin.
Mézières was one of the creative minds behind the look of the T5E, and also a close friend of Moebius...

Oh, and STAR WARS took a lot of ideas he had developed for VALERIAN in the late 60's / early 70's... More on this after the jump (don't have the time to re-load everything here) :
