FemShep N7 Armor, Valkyrie Rifle, + Omniblade (Mass Effect 3)

Re: FemShep N7 Armor and Valkyrie Rifle (Mass Effect 3)

FULL SHOT! looks amazing! ( your work has inspired me so much thank you )

Re: FemShep N7 Armor and Valkyrie Rifle (Mass Effect 3)

Two more pictures. These kinda show why holding the rifle between the chest armor and shoulder armor is tricky. I've gotten it to the point where I can pick it up and hold it in a somewhat believable position (without knocking my armor around, or deflecting the butt of the rifle into my face) quickly.

Don't mind all the goofy straps and trim sticking up... that will SO not be part of the finished costume.

You can tell I'm kind of holding it with not that much pressure against my shoulder. Therefore the shoulder armor stays put. It will be significantly heavier on the other end with the barrels finally mounted, might have to practice swinging it into place again.

Re: FemShep N7 Armor and Valkyrie Rifle (Mass Effect 3)

Those pictures look awesome! The final costume shots are going to be superb. Very cool, keep up the good work.

Sorry to hear about the Techshop closing down. I hope you find a suitable alternative.

Haven't posted yet, but I've been checking out this thread for a while and been meaning to. Everything here is just stunning Freya, you, the costume, the build progress, everything! Honestly the best Mass Effect build I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot :D. Your dedication and attention to detail is just superb. This is one of those builds that I can barely contain my excitement every time I see an update. Keep up the fantastic work.

Oh, and sorry to hear about the techshop, but just keep pulling, I'm sure you'll come up with something.

Re: FemShep N7 Armor and Valkyrie Rifle (Mass Effect 3)

This looks soooo good. Glad I've been following this for a while.

Re: FemShep N7 Armor and Valkyrie Rifle (Mass Effect 3)

Miss Freya, you rock! Your attention to detail is impeccable! I wish I had 10% of your talent!!

Re: FemShep N7 Armor and Valkyrie Rifle (Mass Effect 3)

Here's what I've got so far!

Freya, you are looking amazing!

And good to know that there are woman out there who love the scent of epoxy more than chanel or D&G :D

Outstanding work with breathtaking details!

Whoa, I don't know why but I'm so confused about the multi-quote option now.

Thank you, I really want to get back to work on it, sorry it is taking me so long to get free time in my life again.

I actually found out that there is a Fab Lab (a touring-bus lab, which seems really bizarre to me) and a Hackspace, but they aren't nearly as close to me as the Techshop was. It sounds as though our location is looking for a smaller site/cheaper rent to set up in, I really really hope they find something.

I got my unused balance returned today. That's probably the first time I've looked at randomly bestowed check for 200$ (even if it was previously spent), and felt utterly miserable.

Hah, I wouldn't say I love it... but I think is better than polyester, by a few degrees of foulness.:sick

Re: FemShep N7 Armor and Valkyrie Rifle (Mass Effect 3)

Brilliant costume! The details are fantastic.

I didn't read through all the text since I was mostly enthralled with the progress pics..but i think in one of your pics you were struggling with getting the carbon fiber to form without any wrinkles or disfigurement? this is just a suggestion for next time you want to do carbon fiber armor, look into hydro dipping (im pretty sure that hasn't been mentioned yet as a solution, so forgive me if it has, again i was looking at the purdy pictures lol) it will allow you to get a perfect contour with the carbon fiber pattern

Hydro graphics would have been perfect for the shapes I had to use. At the time I learned about it, I didn't see a carbon-fiber pattern I liked. But now, of course, I see some sample photos with a smaller print, multiple finishes, and the Alsa Corp website offers a custom pattern option. All that stuff is so amazing, I'd probably just pick my favorites and make an original space-armor set completely based on those options.

It's definitely something I will look into for the future. I'd love to build a tank/dipping station when I know I wont be packing up and moving every 11 months or so.

Re: FemShep N7 Armor and Valkyrie Rifle (Mass Effect 3)

I decided to start working on the ass plates. Since I realized I'm out of the thick leather that would have served this area, and buying a 60$+ hide isn't something I can do right now, I'm gonna see how vac-formed ABS works. Hopefully there won't be panty shrapnel with the right thickness, ABS is pretty tough.

Then, while at the hardware store picking up stuff for the N7 rifle electronics, I noticed this magnificently proportioned trash can lid.

The two little flaps, as it turns out, fit nicely over my behind. I tried it on in the store. There is security footage of me doing this:

assplates.jpg

SOLD. 10$ got me a new trash bin and a nicely curved template for the ass plates. Templates, because this trash can is made out of polypropylene and I really don't feel like buying special industrial glue to get it to stick to the seat of my pants. It would probably melt the fabric or something stupid as well. These butt-slices will be sent off to Volpin Props who kindly offered to be my "vac-former b___h."

For the record, my mannequin does not have a gluteus worth writing songs about, so it looks a little crowded back there on her.

Re: FemShep N7 Armor and Valkyrie Rifle (Mass Effect 3)

Now who has that security tape?
I'll never look at a trash can the same again.

Re: FemShep N7 Armor and Valkyrie Rifle (Mass Effect 3)

O wow ! I used a trash can lid just like that to make a predictor mask once ! Great idea .

Re: FemShep N7 Armor and Valkyrie Rifle (Mass Effect 3)

I love finding stuff at the store that saves some time instead of scratchbuilding it. I freaking hate plastic like that that won't take glue/epoxy and there's another type (like green army men) that won't let you sand it!

*that* is freaking epic! LMAO!!!!

The rest of the costume isn't too shabby either ;):thumbsup

Re: FemShep N7 Armor and Valkyrie Rifle (Mass Effect 3)

I have a bit more time on my hands these days, but I keep having stupid, stupid setbacks.

One: I had glue eat through to the vinyl, and some of the finish was taken off. I got some vinyl/rubber non-oil based treatment from the auto store to see if I can buff something to at least a semi-gloss here.

Had a great start with the omniblade this afternoon. I need to get a collapsible work table for when the weather is nice and I feel like going outside. Using a toaster oven that is now strictly for heating small art projects. The form I'm using is a ceramic pot with stretch cotton velvet duct taped around it. Suuuuper high class. I never found any heat resistant gloves either, so I just used silicone cooking spatulas and cotton scraps to pick up the hot plastic and press it over the form.

You may or may not be seeing any further progress from this, because I just dropped it on the floor and the acrylic shattered several small parts around the wrist area and the blade. Using just slightly under 3mm acrylic, but I guess this was the cheap kind, hopefully my final version wont break that easily... I only have duplicate laser templates for the cuffs and the main body. If I still had my own laser cutter, this would have been no big deal. Now we'll have to wait.

Re: FemShep N7 Armor and Valkyrie Rifle (Mass Effect 3)

Making some nice progress... sorry to hear about dropping the blade. I wouldn't be truthful if I said that had never happened to me. I usually have to stop working when something like that happens and then try to get back on board the next day.

Re: FemShep N7 Armor and Valkyrie Rifle (Mass Effect 3)

As it turns out, I just whipped up a lot of epoxy and found this to be mostly in working order. I wont be using epoxy for the final version but it's quick-set and I was impatient to see what the parts looked like. There's a chunk missing out of the wrist, and the cuffs aren't quite right, but this is what 75% of the design looks like put together. I'll probably take another picture or two tomorrow in the day time from different angles.

I've decided that my final version will likely have this buffed matte finish, obtained with 2000 grit paper, unless the fluorescent-edge plastic somehow looks too opaque with it (doubtful). I didn't buff very evenly, but some of the areas will be left more transparent than others to give it dimension and luminosity. I don't think I'll be putting LEDs around it so I'm planning on leaving the lighting effects to the surface treatment.
