Fear The Walking Dead (spin off series)

Does it strike anyone else as if the writers are using lack of common sense among characters to move the story line forward?

Am I remembering incorrectly where it was the sight of one person (be they un-dead, injured neighbor, looter, etc.) standing in the middle of the street that caused the mom, daughter, and son to flee their secure home to hope to find a neighbor's shotgun that may or may not be there?
First they all flee their home and leave the doors unlocked for any intruder to simply walk into.
Then when rushing to leave the neighbors house with the thing they came for they forget the shells allowing the daughter to remain and retrieve them? Really??

I reject the idea that without stupid characters we'd have no drama. In this environment even the best prepped would likely be removed due to chance and circumstance. There are plenty of situations to move the story forward without having to resort to lazy writing.

Yes...that happened.
I'm enjoying the show, really I am but that whole scene of leaving a secure home to find a gun, then leaving their own doors wide open, leaving the shells behind and all that was really poor writing.
Also I dont think the actors are stupid...but clearly ignorant to what's going on and to what exactly the threat truly is.
The show is fun, not perfect but fun...I mean really, no one asking what that bite on the daughters boyfriends shoulder was? How nonchalant and seemingly carefree the mother was with the zombie school Principle AFTER he got clocked in the head.
No 'OMG I killed him!" or "OMG what is he?" as she screams in horror...nuthin, lol...which I do find off putting. Even with the zombie neighbor woman behind the fence...sorry but their reactions weren't exactly what mine would be if I encountered one of those even if I had no prior knowledge or idea of what a zombie is or was.
In that respect I find the acting or writing strange...otherwise it's a fun popcorn show to watch after Ray Donovan. :)

That's the thing though, we've been so inundated with zombie films, shows, books, and comics it's kind of hard to really step and think how we'd react in such a situation. Personally, I found the dad's reaction to seeing zombie Susan and not letting his girlfriend take her out very realistic and reasonable given the situation. It's classic denial, deep down he probably knows that Susan is not going to get better and is really dead but he's still in denial about it and not willing to face up to the facts. He hasn't enough exposure to walkers yet to know that it's not something you get better from and most people now a days, Walking Dead or no Walking Dead would act the same. Heck, even some fans of the zombie genre would possibly be in denial if it happened in real life to someone they knew and cared about, they wouldn't want to believe that it's happening for real and will want to believe that it's only some kind of disease and they can be cured. They'll be like Herschel, to a degree, even if deep down they know there's no cure and their friend, neighbor, or loved one is now a zombie and the person they knew is not coming back, ever.

Can't argue with any of that bud, and I fully agree about the denial...but there's not nearly enough 'fear' of what they're seeing. No one seems really scared. Sure they were scared in the barber shop during the riots, and running away from the mob scene....but fear of these 'sick' people...hmmm, not so much. I get the denial, but everyone's just too calm with what they've been through. The school Principle, the neighbor Susan...even the daughters boyfriend...just not freaked out enough for me but a guy in the middle of the street made them run out of their house? It's a bit much for me to take in at face value...but like I said, it's still a fun show and I'll keep watching.

I agree. If they're not used to this kind of thing they should be be utterly terrified at what's going around even if they're in shock and denial. They should be paranoid that anyone they get near could be infected, they should be afraid of every little noise.

:lol The acting! The writing!:facepalm

Why does no one act scared?
Dad/boyfriend shows up at the girlfriends house with the ex-wife is tow. (Yea that would go over well) He deserves to be eaten.
They leave the safety of the house to grab a shotgun, leave the house wide open, grab gun, forget ammo!!! Send dumb sister back ALONE to retrieve ammo.
Dad/boyfriend.... "you know how I feel about guns"... He deserves to be zombified. I bet he uses one tiny sheet of TP to wipe his backside...
The hispanic guy is going to end up being an illegal and become the HERO.
The .gov showed up to "take care of everyone". (It's all rainbows and unicorn milk now!!)

They need to write in a Bruce Jenner or a brony character to make this PC train-wreck complete.

I've moved from watching it to DVRing it where it will probably sit on the hard drive for 6 months until I get sick of seeing it on the list and delete it.

I liked episode 3. Creepy and refreshing to see zombies in the city and not in ruins and woods. Still think the scope is too small, they should have added more storylines with different people. The characters reactions to he zombies seem pretty ok to me, if you see a disoriented person that looks sick, your first instinct shouldn't be to kill them. I'm looking forward to the military underestimating the situation and get overrun by a zombiehorde.

The simple answer to why everyone is not acting as scared as people think they should is simple, they don't know enough to be scared yet. Remember, they don't know exactly what's going on just yet, they know something is not right but they have no idea just how bad it is and how much worse it's going to get. The problem you're running into is that you know what's going on because you've all watched the Walking Dead so you know all about walkers and just how bad things get, these people don't. Things are just getting started and most of them don't even want to believe anything is really happening or that it's not as bad as it seems. This is where everybody is at right now and where most people would be if something like this were to happen in real life, esp. when there's no such thing as Night of the Living Dead and the Walking Dead and other such things that fans of the genre would be much more cautious of what's going on.

We think - and probably correctly - that we would make smarter decisions than the characters. I'd be willing to bet that if you asked 100 10-year olds, boys and girls, how you deal with zombies, a majority of them would know to shoot them in the head. The genre is so popular, that just about everyone knows the SOP. As has been mentioned, these characters don't have the benefit of knowing what we know, so they do things we wouldn't do, and vice versa. We wouldn't have nearly the learning curve these characters do, and most "zombie outbreaks' would have a very short duration because of that.

A buddy and I have joked for years that one of us could call the other, say "Romero/Russo/Fulci/Snyder/whoever zombies" and the other would immediately know exactly how bad the situation was, and how best to deal with it. We don't have 37 zombie plans because I don't think we'd need many at all.

I'm enjoying the show because of/despite that.

I'm firmly convinced, now more than ever, that TWD and FtWD takes place in a reality where zombie lore doesn't exist outside of Voodoo practitioners.

As to my reaction to an actual zombie apocalypse, I will squeal excitedly that it's finally happening, take pleasure in shooting the zombified remains of the people who **** me off, and head to the nearest graveyard for the greatest game of Whack-A-Mole EVER.

Well, if you ever listened to me, you'd have been on the right page to begin with!

To be fair, I've always believed it, what with nobody saying "zombie" at all, but the fact that in the face of what's going on, literally nobody, including people who would be firmly engrossed in zombie media here, is saying "2+2=Z," finally cinched it for me.

They have already said that in TWD "world" that zombies don't exist, and probably horror movies don't exist either. The concept of a dead person getting up and walking around is a totally alien concept to these people.

I just hope we are given some kind of "punch" at the end, otherwise we have nothing new here. No patient zero, no explanation, no cause, just cameras following a family around.

I'm hoping we at least get some kind of conspiracy theory or govt. cover up at the end...

What an awful world where horror movies don't exist! :D

On the one hand I feel the family should at this point have sufficient experience with "the infected" to be very alarmed. At the same time most of us live in physical surroundings where we allow the authorities to do their job. At the end of episode 3 the cavalry rides in to save the day. That would allay the fears of most of us. I wonder if by the end of these six episodes we will see what happens when the barrier between Us and Them fall...

I would have thought that Travis at least would have brought Griselda's injury to the National Guard's attention. There should have been qualified medics there (unless they were already dealing with the hospital(s).

Well, considering that the National Guard only just arrived I don't think that there's been quite enough time for Travis to notify them and add to that that Griselda is essentially nobody to him she's probably not at the front of his mind. Now, if he doesn't say anything in this next episode then you have something.

I'm not sure I've ever been so dissapointed in a show I originally had such high hopes for.

I hate everything about this show. There is nothing likable about any of these characters. Well, except for the old barber, who I wish would just kill them all!

The writing is absolutely awful, the "we are the world" casting is transparent and the druggie is insufferable...what a little ****.

DONE. :thumbsdown

I was so unenthused with the premier that I waited until last night to subject myself to episodes 2 & 3. I've never HATED a show so much! It's so terrible that it's actually taking away from the genius of TWD. I haven't been this disappointed since Prometheus, and that's saying something! The culmination of soulless illogical writing, mediocre acting and lack of interesting characters makes for one of the most mundane hrs on TV right now.

Missed Opportunity!

They've really spoiled the chance at telling a great origin story here. Unfolding these events from multiple viewpoints/groups would have been 1000 times more interesting.

I hope all of these characters are slaughtered and eaten before the season's end!
