Fallout 3 Prop - Pre-War American Flag (Virgo 11)

I've recently finished Fallout 3, and I think it's one of the best Xbox 360 games I've ever played - one of the best games on any system, up there with The Elder Scrolls. Anyway, as such, I wanted to build some props from it, because the atmosphere is so well done. I started off with some easier props, which were available on these boards (thanks for the Nuka labels!), and then I stepped it up. This is my third to last prop from the series, but they'll only get better. Stay tuned.

This prop was something that I didn't really think much about doing until I saw this famous picture from the Fallout 3 Advertising Campaigns that Bethesda got into so much trouble over. This shot is iconic, and I thought the easiest in-universe prop to do from it was none other than the flag.

Not my picture, I can take it down if need be. ;)

So, anyway, I started off with a Betsy Ross flag, which both did some 13/14 of the work for me, and solved the ethical problem of cutting up American flags (since the flag hasn't been flown regularly over government offices for fifty years, it's considered a "historical" flag, rather than a technical American flag which is protected under Flag Etiquette rules). After some work on the star, and sewing it on, this is what I ended up with:

Overall shot.

A shot of the starfield.

Now, I wanted this clean, not weathered, because I couldn't bear to burn this thing. Since nothing in Fallout is clean, I'm calling this the
Virgo 11 Lunar Lander flag which can be found in the Museum of Science in a case.
It's a fun prop.

Oh, and here's a sneak peek at another Fallout prop which I have for scaling on this.

I'm pretty happy with it. Let me know what you think, and thanks for looking!

hmmm, if I were to tackle this, I guess i would head on over to wal-mart and get an embroidered flag from there.

Armed with a stitch remover i'd take out all the stars from the flag.

I think wal-mart has em, i'm not sure, but then maybe grab a couple of these babies and start stitching them onto the flag.

doesn't seem like a terribly complicated build.

but just to be sure, we are talking about this flag right?

i don't play the game, though as much attention as it's been getting I think I should have a crack at it.

Bethsoft needs to get on the ball and make some. They could have some good items with NCR, U.S., and Enclave flags along with the propaganda posters from NV.

Yeah; that's right. The only problem is that I'm not sure I want to take apart an actual flag; they're supposed to be treated almost reverently. I'm pretty sure it's illegal, too. If other people think it's ok, that'd probably be the easiest way to do it, but I'd feel a little odd when I did it.

Re: Fallout 3: American Flag

Maybe you can find one with the stars not on it yet or have one made in this configuration at a local clothing print shop.

Re: Fallout 3: American Flag

Well, I understand that some flags are made with a blue dot in the center of a star, so it's not technically a flag but can be used as one to burn or trash for a movie, or something. I wouldn't have any problems cutting up any proxy flags, but I don't really want to mess around with an actual American flag.

Re: Fallout 3: American Flag

I've been doing some research on Flag etiquette, and I've discovered that only "flags which are displayed regularly" are considered American flags - or the 48, 49, and 50 star flags. All other American flags are considered "historical flags," which include the famous "Don't Tread on Me" flag, the 13 star Star Spangled Banner, the 15 star and 15 stripe flag, and most interestingly for our purposes, the Betsy Ross flag.

That right there, that's a pretty good start, and I don't feel so bad about modifying it.

All those flags are made in China anyway. A flag does not define who you are. Take one apart, stick new stuff to it, do whatever you want and do not worry about all that "Don't mess with the 'Merican flag" stuff. Plus its not illegal to do anything to it. Its our right. Make the Fallout flag, it would be awesome.

I agree.
The flag is just cloth, we're the ones who give meaning to it. It's not like it's stitched together from the uniforms of fallen soldiers or the flag from the Battle of Fort McHenry. Also, it's not illegal and you're not disrespecting America by doing this. You're using it to make something you'll still highly value. I say go for it and be proud of it.

Re: Fallout 3: American Flag

As it is, I did order a Betsy Ross style flag, so that solves the problem fairly simply anyway. No qualms about it either way.

Using a historic flag isn't a bad idea as that'll keep everyone happy since it isn't made to display like normal flags.

Thanks guys.

Epileptics, I can't take credit for the spacing; I only set the larger star, lol.

What kind of fabric did you use? Cotton, poly, or nylon? Where did you get the middle star? Can you upload new pictures of it?

Thanks
