Dreads

Personally I hate backer rod. It doesn't move right. There were two people who sold foam dreads...Bambooie and monsterroom. Not sure if they still sell them, but I'm sure someone here can enlighten us more...

If I could, I would always go with foam latex dreads. Nothing beats the flexibility, sway, and real feel of them.

I agree that Bambooiee and Monsterroom are two of the best places to go for dreads. Expect to spend at least $150 for a set of them. I can't recall who else makes them. But I know there are others.

Properly tapered backer rod moves just fine with dread rings on. If ya do very little taper, no they won`t move at all. hehhhe I agree that cold foams da bomb.

When i used to make them i used sponge matress foam, fine not chunky and cut it in to the desired length, width(taper to a round point) then shape
Spray with a primer twice, two coats of black gloss, dress with ringlets then attach to head.
Light and man do people love it when toss em around

"May the prey be many and you blade never dull"

One idea to that hose-thing: Just let the hose be as it is. Stitch the end of the dreads from leather or an other material and glue it to the end of the hose!

Maybe that works! :)

If it looks good...... hmmm... that's an other thing... hehe

No, actually it works quite well if you cut up the end to the length of the tapered part and roll it up, then glue the parts together. Done that with bike tubes. If you don't mind the seamline, it works quite nicely. I'll put up pics.

I dunno- I would just stick with backer rod- especially if you are doing a P1 or P2. It has a nice texture and no seamlines.

Backer rod looks very nice, problem is just, it's too rigid. I use 15mm backer rod, so it's not THAT thick, however, it barely moves - or "swooshes".. Also, I couldn't get any plain black one, so I had to paint them grey ones black. I used acrylic paint, which is obviously pretty flexible, but not so much as to not have to be careful with your movements. Either way, the whole bunch of dreads (~50) is way too stiff if you put the bio and underhelmet on. Don't know how you do it, but I think it is very nice for display and otherwise sucks.

the bike tube dreads however swoosh really nicely and look quite cool. I haven't done a full setup yet, so that remains to be seen. Looks promising though.

F backer rod. Spend the money and get the good stuff and be done with it. The time you save screwing with them can be put towards another part of the costume.

excuse me, but what is there "not to do right" with backer rod?? It's not like it came with a 500 working steps manual. It's simply too stiff.

Who is Bambooiee ?
Where can i find is dreads ?

I have changed my mind about fuel hoses... The one i have seen are too much rigid... I will go to the cer piece store i was working before and i will look if they carry a better softer brand...
Fo the ends i was planning to make the ends with plastic body filler...

I will mabe keep this material idea the crafting of my neck collar...

Maybe i will craft foam dreads and cover them with latex...

When I made my first set of dreads, I just went to the local hardware store and bought some black rope. From far away, it looks good, but up close, it becomes apparant how home made it is. It has the right feel, though. You can definately get the "swoosh."
