Dragoncon 2011

Hey guys, my first Dcon too. Coming from the UK I'm restricted as to the amount of costumes and size-wise too. Have decided on my latest 'The walking Dead' sheriff uniform, as assembled with from this very board. Just want to know if anyone has heard if police uniforms (albeit a fictitious one) is acceptable over there or if similar in previous years has caused problems. Don't want to fall foul of local laws.

I'm in neighboring South Carolina, and everything I've ever seen on the subject of legality is in the context of an intent to defraud or deceive. Especially in the context of a con, I don't think you'll end up on the wrong side of the law.

Now, there are some pretty rough parts of Atlanta, as with any large city. I don't think I'd advise walking around at night in anything that could suggest you are a lone member of law enforcement.

I'm going this year. This is my first DC. I'm kicking myself for missing the MST3K panel as well as not meeting the cast last year. Nevertheless, I'm bringing my Crow and recently finished Tom Servo with me.

I'm going as part of an MST3k costume group, so if you see us, bring the bots over for pictures!

agreed.. you should be fine as long as you stay around the hotel areas ( and don't try to arrest anyone!) BTW, TWD will still be filming here when D*C is happening. They are looking for very slender zombie extras..

I'm skipping this year. They are selling to many ticket and it is just too packed for me to enjoy myself. They can add all the hotels they want but 90% of the attendees will still end up spending most of their time in the main two hotels.

This will be my 7th year attending. Bringing a lot of Harry Potter related costumes, but a few other things too. Somehow I usually manage to wear about 8 costumes over the course of 3 days.

I know nothing about how conventions are run...so I'm curious if anyone knows about this. Do they actually pay the actors to be there or are they supposed to rely on making money on just autographs? It seems like an awful lot of people to have to pay to be there if that's the case.

Don't hold me to this, but I listened to a lot of the audio interviews with the track directors last year on The Unique Geek. From what I heard, I think they pay travel and room for the guests. Now the mega ones like Shatner probably get some kind of fee too, but I believe most of them have to make money from autos/pics/merch.

That's the case for most of them. As Neo said, some of the big-name actors (Shatner, Nimoy, etc.) get paid extra, but for the most part, they're flown out, put up in a room, provided food and security, and everything beyond that is up to them. Some of the truly fan-oriented guests love being there and will sign and do pics for free (even though they're not supposed to), others are VERY interested in the money and that's the only reason they show up. Most of them fall somewhere in the middle.

As an update on the guest thing, I e-mailed one of the handlers I regularly see at D*C every year and I got a quick response. This is what she said:

"It depends on the actor. The newer the show the better the deal they can get. When the show is new, DragonCon pays all their expenses and they earn money at the table with autographs and photo ops.....BUT a percentage has to go back to the convention in addition to the percentage the actor pays their agent.

Older shows and actors........they have to pay their own way and hope they cover their own expenses by earning monies selling autographs and photo ops. Because DragonCon pays nothing but giving them a table, they do not have to pay a percentage back to the convention, but they still have to pay their agent for getting them into the show. "

6th year running. I'm going to start taking bets on how many times we hear the ambulance from our condo.
