Re: Sidkit Malcolm Reynolds Gun Firefly TV & Serenity Movie ver. DEFINITIVE LIMITED R

Oh, and a small tip. For those replicas going to the US, you want to NOT mention anywhere in the customs declaration that it contains wood. If you do, then you will need some special declaration form that certifies that the wood used was not obtained by "illegal logging". (Some regulation that went into effect around 2008-2010.) I recently sent over my metal Vera to the US and put "wood" in the description, which caused the shipper to raise hell until they were convinced to release it.

Don't worry, shipping will not contains nothing reported. Who received our blade runner bottles already know what I mean

Re: Sidkit Malcolm Reynolds Gun Firefly TV & Serenity Movie ver. DEFINITIVE LIMITED R

Yeah , I believe the majority of people agree , Vertical is the original way....there wasn't much grain in the Walnut as to other woods

Re: Sidkit Malcolm Reynolds Gun Firefly TV & Serenity Movie ver. DEFINITIVE LIMITED R

Yep, as screen accurate as possible... So vertical for me ;).

Re: Sidkit Malcolm Reynolds Gun Firefly TV & Serenity Movie ver. DEFINITIVE LIMITED R

Just to clarify (in case I wasn't explaining properly). Left is how the grips should be cut for a screen-accurate look.

Good illustration.

Yea, the lines running through the grips kills it.

Re: Sidkit Malcolm Reynolds Gun Firefly TV & Serenity Movie ver. DEFINITIVE LIMITED R

Yeah, the photo sarednab posted in post #234 has the grain running the wrong way. You want the grain parallel to the table it's setting on, not 90 degrees to it like it currently is.

EDIT: I whipped this up to help clarify the situation. I think some people may be confusing horizontal and vertical. You guys want Version A, it looks like the photo above is Version B.

Both grains in pic you posted is vertical. Horizzontal is different

Re: Sidkit Malcolm Reynolds Gun Firefly TV & Serenity Movie ver. DEFINITIVE LIMITED R

Terminology aside, the important thing is that version A looks good, version B looks bad.

Re: Sidkit Malcolm Reynolds Gun Firefly TV & Serenity Movie ver. DEFINITIVE LIMITED R

The wood will be the one you seen on post #234
As I said, high quality italian walnut with vertical grain.

That's great.:thumbsup I don't think anyone is questioning the quality of the wood. The only thing folks are wondering about is if you can machine the grips like in drewsmith's "A" image (and the diagram I did) since it makes a bit difference to the final look.

Re: Sidkit Malcolm Reynolds Gun Firefly TV & Serenity Movie ver. DEFINITIVE LIMITED R

Yea, I'd have to say that if the grips came out with the grain as shown in post 234, I would end up replacing them sooner rather than later.

Would be nice if the grips could be like in A, but if this is not possible and they come out as B, I could live with that. On the picture the grain is pretty obvious, but the wood isn't stained yet. I guess the grain in the final grips would not be that obvious...

Re: Sidkit Malcolm Reynolds Gun Firefly TV & Serenity Movie ver. DEFINITIVE LIMITED R

We take the wood today! This new walnut is very very similar to american one. Check yourself

Re: Sidkit Malcolm Reynolds Gun Firefly TV & Serenity Movie ver. DEFINITIVE LIMITED R

Their seems to be a bit of a communication breakdown going on about the wood and grain but it is clear from the photos of the wood that the grips are going to come out like diagram B in DrewSmith007's post rather than A as we had hoped because the walnut sheets have been cut across the grain rather than with it, sadly. Still opens up the opportunity for a run of screen accurate grips for someone!

Im just happy we are able to have the opportunity , to own one of these babies....I will be happy with either outcome , things can always be replaced later if needed !!!

That's also a possibility, off course. As far as I can see, these grips are just screwed on. So if someone will offer a more screen-accurate grip in the future, it wouldn't be too hard to replace them. But let's first wait to see how the stained grips will turn out.

Staining just has an overall darkening effect on wood, the lines would be just as visible.

I agree that a run of better grips could be done later, but I'd rather not spend more money.

Re: Sidkit Malcolm Reynolds Gun Firefly TV & Serenity Movie ver. DEFINITIVE LIMITED R

On the other hand, playing devil's advocate... getting wood grips at all is a bonus since the original Sidkits had brown resin.
