Does anyone really know how the baby in Eraserhead was made?

Someone here had made one, and in the thread was posted a snippet from an interview where David Lynch got upset and wouldn't talk about how the baby was made. I've heard rumors that it was a calf fetus. A friend and I were just talking about the movie and he tells me, "It's no big secret, just a rubber puppet." Was this ever verified?
