Generally I'm making Cybermen, but I had a friend who turned me onto this crazy character from the McCoy era of doctor who. The episode is "the happiness patrol" the monster is the KANDYMAN! A brightly colored collection of candy and robot fused together as only doctor who can imagine! :) First I started with a lot of reference, (which there wasn't much of!) I found this image online to show everyone what I've bitten of for myself.:lol

Nightwing's Mannequin is the close size for this build, so that's the first part done.

Kandyman 1 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Patterns are simple right now, just tubes, but they get a lot harder as we go on!

Kandyman 2 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Tubes cut and glued for the arms and legs.

Kandyman 3 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Plasti-dipped with neon colors! This build is already getting crazy!

Kandyman 4 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Using sheets of 1/4" Sentra, I cut out exo-skeleton parts for the legs and arms.

Kandyman 5 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Kandyman 6 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Sanded and painted the parts with design master super silver (my favorite!)

Kandyman 7 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Kandyman 8 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Wanting the exo-skeleton to move, I hinged the parts together with 1/4-20 bolts and acorn nuts. These are the arms put together.

Kandyman 9 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

My wife made a mold of the acorn nuts to make resin copies for the rest of the bolts in the arms. One of the best old tricks I learned from my movie days - spray paint the mold with the color you want before casting.

Kandyman 10 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Voila! The resin casts come out of the mold already painted!

Kandyman 11 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

The finished arm exo-skeleton. Only 3 more to go.

Kandyman 12 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

The upper arm tube in painting process, first the pink stripe.

Kandyman 13 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Kandyman 14 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Next the white stripe.

Kandyman 15 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Next I wrap the foam tubes with a clear sheet of 20mm PETG to simulate an acrylic tube look.

Kandyman 16 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Then I add strips of 1/8" foam to create metal bands on the edges of the tubes.

Kandyman 17 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

The blue tape helps keep the glue off the clear areas and guides the foam.

Kandyman 18 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Kandyman 19 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Finally I add Metal mylar tape over the foam and it gives it that metal look, cool huh?

For the joints between limbs, I couldn't get the right ribbed tubing, so I made it instead! It's some really soft foam, like L100. My wife cut tons of circles out, bevel cutting the outside of the circle inwards, and the inside of the circle outwards. Then when you glue them together they form this accordion style stack.

Kandyman 22 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

After plasti-dipping with 3 coats of black, I joined the upper and lower arms with the joint inbetween.

Kandyman 23 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Then I glues the exo-skeleton arm joints on!

Kandyman 24 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Kandyman 25 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

The lower leg almost done.

Kandyman 26 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

The lower legs with the accordion joints glued on and the exo-skeleton joints attached to the lower parts. They need the thighs!

Kandyman 27 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

The Thigh tubes are tapered patterns that when glued together make normal tubes - taper! :)

Kandyman 28 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Once coated with 3 coats of white plasti-dip I masked for the candy stripes.

Kandyman 29 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

The red stripes painted.

Kandyman 30 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Now a pink stripe, I later found out that a yellow stripe is there as well, but that came at the very end.

Kandyman 31 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

The other thigh is the same tube plasti-dipped white too. Then I cut out strips of 1" matress foam and painted them pink. I beveled both sides so when I glue them, down they will curve and create this rounded "puffy" look.

As always, comments, critiques or questions are welcomed and encouraged.:)

OMG I love this I have wanted to build a KandyMan since I was a little girl sadly I stayed a little girl (just the height of your average female companion lol) and thus felt a short KandyMan just seemed wrong. I just adore seeing one being built I will watch your progress eagerly! Is it going to be a standing prop or something you can wear?

Have you got an update for this at all? It all looks great so far. :D

My friend made the original costume for the show and I bet he'd get a kick out of seeing it.

Looking good, brings back memories of me making the original one !
Rob

OMG! Thank you so much sir! I can't believe I lost this thread, so sorry it took so long to see your response. I understand from the man I made this for, he talked with you about making the original and you commented how much work it was. After working on this I can see why, I didn't even go the distance you went (ran out of time) But it was still quite the undertaking!

Yes sir I do!! Thank you for your patience!

UPDATE!! - The final parts to get the thing done! I actually finished the project and forgot to upload the rest of the photos! Bad ME!:facepalm Here they are at last, thanks for waiting.

Kandyman 33 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Starting on the waist, using 1/2 L200 as a base, then gluing 3/4 mattress foam for the body. I glue it together flat first.

Kandyman 34 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Then I create the shape of the waist

Kandyman 35 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

I cut out the leg holes, and the hole for the body/chest is already there.

Kandyman 36 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

I made a test to see if the texture would work, it's spray 90 coating the foam to seal it, then a couple of coats of latex to really seal the surface. Then I painted it with 2 shades of yellow and some orange to get the color right.

Kandyman 37 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

The test looked good, so now I spray 90 the whole surface.

Kandyman 38 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

After a few coats of spray 90 glue

Kandyman 39 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

After a few coats of latex.

Kandyman 40 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Beginning to add color.

Kandyman 41 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

The chest came together really quick, this was after a day of work, I burned lines in for the color separations.

Kandyman 42 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

The colors were hand painted in by my wife, testing a new coating, that seems to work, pre colored.

Kandyman 43 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

I trace out the chest and back openings.

Kandyman 44 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Then cut them out!

Kandyman 45 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

I found some scrap circuit boards at my local electronics surplus place and I hot glued them in place. I had to cover some of the back leads with felt, they were sharp and pokey.

Kandyman 46 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

And now they show through great!

Kandyman 47 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Beginning the head, this is actually my second attempt, the first one was WAY too big and so back to the patterns. But this size is good. I salvaged the nose from the first head, and I turned some eyes on the lathe at work.

Kandyman 48 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Coated with 3 coats of plasti-dip and ready for balls!

Kandyman 49 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

I rigged some motors to spin the eyes, but they had trouble all the time and I had to disable them.

Kandyman 50 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Opps! Forgot the cheeks! soft foam glued on and coated with spray glue and latex like the waist and feet.

Kandyman 51 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

My wife was casting balls by the hundreds, each batch we customized the color, we had 3 molds of sizes, gumball, m&m and something in between. My friend is sanding the bottoms so we can glue them on.

Kandyman 52 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Beginning the gluing!

Kandyman 53 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

The face and nose got most of the M&Ms. I marked out a rough area for them.

Kandyman 54 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

The back and sides got the gumballs.

Kandyman 55 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Almost forgot! The last of the details, ears and knees. I had to guess on knee details since reference was scarce.

Kandyman 56 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Coated and painted and ready for attaching!

Kandyman 57 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Almost done! It was crazy how we thought resin would be light, but when you glue over a thousand small resin balls to this head, it weighed 40 pounds!!

Kandyman 58 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Finally getting to the feet, same process as the waist, just glued on floormats for the bottoms with tread.

Kandyman 59 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Just starting to get spray glue on.

Kandyman 60 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Glued on the upper legs to the waist. Getting there...

The final pics! From Gallifrey one where we premiered it. It was quite the hit, even though it wasn't finished, it still caused quite the stir.

Kandyman 61 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

The finished pieces set up to surprise my friend.

Kandyman 62 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

The head still needed some balls and the mustache glued on, but these are the last minute things you do at cons!

Kandyman 63 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

My friend was VERY surprised, here he's test fitting it for the first time. Amazingly, the measurements worked! I only had to modify the knees a little. And no, he's not in pain. :)

Kandyman 64 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

And the final suit at gallifrey with my wife. We couldn't get the wiring or the sugar coating done in time, but it was a big hit regardless.

Kandyman 65 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

We even did a last minute little skit for the masquerade with a 10th planet Cyberman I helped make too.

Kandyman 66 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Dancing around!

Kandyman 67 by Mal Keller, on Flickr

Up on stage with his Girlfriend who dressed as a member of Helen A's guard.

In the end, A ton of work, but not bad for about a months worth of work and in the end my friend was brought to tears over the dedication we put in to make his dream come true. Thanks for checking this out!

That was a really ambitious and unique villain costume. I love seeing classic Doctor Who, especially the obscure ones. Really awesome work!!!
