Divergent (Post-release)

I haven't read the Divergent books, but it looks interesting. This segregation concept seems unique though it's kinda weird at the same time. Neil Burger also directed The Illusionist and Limitless.

I will be seeing this tonight at Alamo Draft house in kzoo. See how it goes.might be able to offer a sober and drunk perspective

What a boring movie. The writing was bland and the story was incredibly predictable. Even the alcohol I was drinking couldn't make this movie more exciting.

I loved the NY Times review, in that it talked about movie casting, and said NOTHING about what the ****ing movie itself is about. Time for a new reviewer.

Wow.

I went in with low expectations and not knowing much of anything of the story. I came out of the theater wanting two hours and $8 back. There's just so much wrong that calling it a "wanna-be Hunger Games" gives the Hunger Games a bad rap. This just never works, never clicks and you never feel a thing for the characters or the storyline. I expected more, I wanted more and the little reward was Shailene Woodley... who sadly, just doesn't seem to have what it takes to save this movie.

I hate to compare her to Jennifer Lawrence, but those comparisons are going to happen and there's many reasons why. Woodley is just so terribly miscast, that I almost expected it to work just because of that. Don't get me wrong, she has talent and she might live up to her hype one day, but this just didn't work in her favor at all. I never bought her as as her character, at all. Her male counterpart (Theo James) - had strong moments, but couldn't sell the "softening" up his character towards the end.

Now this wasn't really a terribly horrendous movie. It just kinda plodded along and you waited for the what-you-know-was-going to-happen - it was how they got there that could've made the film and the how-they-got-there depended on Woodley and James. And while James worked for the 1/2 a movie and Woodley tried (and tried hard), it just never worked.

The Hunger Games had their great bright starlet with a monster supporting cast... Harrelson, Sutherland, Tucci, Kravitz and even Banks (and up-and-comers like Thor's brother). Divergent gives us an ok showing by Kate Winslet, and well, Maggie Q and Mekhi Pfifer where there - Ashley Judd outside of her death scene seemed to bring something no one else brought. ...the up-and-comers were represented by Miles Teller; Miles frigging Teller - who plays the same character he plays in every other movie and looks vacant everytime you see him (really, this guy is going to be Reed Richards?!?).

Maybe I'm being too harsh. Woodley is fun to watch, even is she doesn't quite "click."

I have not been compelled, at all, to see this film. Beyond the similarities to the 'Hunger Games' franchise, the trailers have a "Twilight saga", teen angst vibe, that TOTALLY annihilates any interest I might have been harboring, upon first hearing of the project. Pffft.

I was disappointed in this movie. just before I watched the movie I read all the books. The books were freaking amazing! In the books,Four was a bad ass character and in the movie he seemed like a wimp.

I haven't read the books, so I'm coming at this as if it were just a movie, with no previous works to compare it to.

The basic plot was a solid one, and was ripe for good storytelling. However, it fell a little flat. There was so much more they could have done with it, but failed.

The casting was quite good. Everyone seemed to have a solid grasp on who their characters were.

The cinematography and special effects were done well. Nothing over the top, and nothing lackluster.

The score was okay. It worked for the movie, but it could have been better.

With these points in mind, the movie SHOULD have garnered a 7/10.

Individually, the pieces were great. However, they did not meld well together, so I give it a 5/10.
