Late to the party, but I finally got a chance to take a shot of my own base :)

I like it, it reminds me of the ship they used in the first film.

Gruson, that is an AWESOME base!!!!

Is that a candle holder? Where did you get it? I love the similarity to the ship.

Just a bit late at posting :). At present i've got mine displayed in a custom made lighted stand, built by blackwell fx, however now I have some decent HD pics of the fortress of solitude crystal console (and getting more daring with creating props, half way through a Dexter slide box replica) I think i will try and replicate one upright from the console.

Did you ever finish your crystal console? I have nearly finished mine. I just need to build a frame for the inside, then it's all good. I posted a thread on my progress. If you havn't seen it check it out, it's going to look cool when it's all lit up.

Most of the time people just buy em from me when I do a run of em, but I have seen people do amazing things with patience, a belt sander, and some clear acrylic rod.

It's how the ones in the movies were made :)

For a figure (guessing 12"), you can check with local glass bead shops and see if they do custom designs. If you can find a glass artist, they can carve a piece down for you that should be in scale with what you want to use with the figure.

How do you make the crystal? I want a crystal for a base for a figure.

Just a wee tip for you, if your going to attempt to make your own crystals, try to use cast acrylic square rod, the extruded rod seems to melt with the friction of the belt sander, the cast rod is much easier to work with when sanding, it just turns to a fine powder. After you have completely pollished the finished crystal your better off heat treating it, it should help prevent 'crazing' in the plastic. I just place the crystals in really hot water for a while and slowly let it cool, repeat this process 3 or 4 times. Please do not use alcohol based cleaners for the plastic, this will cause the surface to crack, I found this out the hard way sadly with my first attempt at my crystals, 4 crystals and hours of hard work down the tubes. Hope that was of use to you. Any questions just ask and I will try to help.

LISTEN TO THIS MAN!!!! ^^^^^^^

Cast acrylic is a freaking DREAM to work with after you play with extruded.

Cast is good for some things, but grinding it down on a sander ain't one of em. I have a few pieces around here that have cost me a few degrees of sanity (and a few burns as well) since acrylic heats up like a *******.

Square rod helps when you have a lot of angles you want to make. Round rod kinda skips around on the sander a bit.

I flame polished mine, but you have to be REALLY careful otherwise you set your last 4 or 5 hours of work on fire, or worse, cause it to get bubbly and then have to redo the whole side again.
