Destiny (Video Game) Discussion

There's a lot of side stuff to do as some of the exotics are now multi-part quests. I'm working on one for the gun smith that required me to collect 4 randomly dropped guns, i got them all within a week just from leveling up my character and grinding for reputation, and then i had to get 75 kills with a shotgun with one of those analyses things he sells running, and now i have to break down certain shotguns. It's a long quest.

It IS pretty minimal for the storyline and campaign particularly at the beginning. The more you progress, the better it gets but most of the questions from the beginning never get answered. It really feels that they left a lot to be explained later on in DLC or the online database:)sick ) when you discover enemies, places and such or they never tried to develop one...it has one of the worst opening scenes for a video game ever IMHO.

Yeah sadly they keep refusing to put the damned grimoire cards into the game even as a searchable database like in Mass Effect. I've barely started TTK, i've been farming items to get ready for the 260 level strike list and ranking up my factions. Down side is i'm running out of engrams to hand over to boost my cryptarch level as i've had him open up so many blue ones that now most of them are open when i grab them off the field. He was nice enough to give me a year 2 super good advice in one of his packages. I've got 75 strange coins again for xur, i spend 78 or so last week, so i'm going to try and grab more. Hopefully he has lots of stuff i can use. I really want Jade Rabbit.

So, not to be repetitive, but...is there a single player game that can be completed without being forced to do raids and other multiplayer content? I played through Borderlands in SP, and it was diverting if a bit monotonous after a while. But it never required me to do a raid or team up with anyone if I didn't want to.

If Destiny is the same, I can justify spending $30 on it. If not, then screw it.

I liked it when TKK launched. Sadly, all the great things they had going in that first run has either been nerfed all to hell or changed and everything has become a waste of time. What really irks me is low level enemies being able to kill me so easily. WTF. When I was just 2-5 levels below them I could barely damage them... but now a lvl 3 enemy can damage and kill my lvl 40 guardian. WTF!?!!

It has now been geared more towards playing with others, as going solo is being pretty much abandoned.

Not worth my time anymore... and I really liked the game.

I'd recommend just playing the demo.

The PvE end of things is basically dead at this point as they're catering to the PvP crowd and doing a bad job at that. The last Iron Banner was a disaster, they used Rift as the game type and it was literally the one everyone voted against. They tried skill based matchmaking which made you team up with with even worse internet connections than before so lag made it unplayable and the items dropped were all low level. What gets me is most folks aren't even able to max out because the only way to get a 320 light ghost is PvP or raid. Neither of which half the players do. The raids are still only getting 10 percent of the players in them. I think there's so much turmoil in bungie right now they can't get anything done between the bad press, losing a ceo who may have leaked info and breached his contract, and losing that lawsuit to one of the founders of the company that they forced out.

You can do just about everything except fight bosses in the SP campaign.

If you can get The Taken king legendary edition cheap it's not bad as you get a good bit of stuff. Problem is Bungie didn't realize how unsocial gamers are, most of us don't even use our mics while in strikes with other folks. You do have to deal with their "maintenance" when everything they own from the forum to the game is down for 6 hours and doesn't work right for a day after. Everyone say a prayer for me that Xur sells and exotic primary this week. I raided Banshee for gun orders yesterday but only got one in, the rest will be next week. Hoping that on the 7th my exotic quest from him kicks in as i think i gave him all the items.

Sooooo....I can't beat the game in Single Player, then? I mean, I'm assuming a "boss fight" is something I have to complete to actually finish the story, yes? It's not just, like, a seriously powerful troll at the end of a random, unrelated dungeon? (yes, I know it's sci-fi, but you get my point)

Exactly. Boss fights are done in fireteams like raids and strikes. The planets open up after you finish the last SP mission, but none of the major boss fights, TTK, Crota, etc can be done on your own.

As much as I hate to say it i'd never want to try Crota or any raid with a team I didn't know. A strike with random matchmaking is one thing but the raids would be a mess. Yeah the last single player mission that really is the end of the game until the DLCs is the fight in the Black Garden. The raids are all optional bosses. Most of the DLC have single player end games but even some of those you could always use help with. Especially in house of wolves.

Not sure I want to play a sometimes-MMO, then. Guess I'll pass on it unless/until they give you AI companions.

Right now, I'm finishing a first playthru of Dragon Age: Origins, and I'm struck again by how enjoyable it is as a design concept. I like having a party of players to work with. I'm not super into multiplayer these days, mostly because I don't have the time in solid blocs to get absorbed in things. I've got a baby due in the first week of March, so I could handle a shooter, but only one that I can pause and interrupt at my own leisure, and one where I don't have to waste half an hour spamming "LFG" just to actually play the game.

I played MMOs in the early '00s, until I came to realize that they just aren't for me. It sounds like this is basically operating on a sometimes-single-player-but-other-times-you-have-to-raid-like-an-MMO model, and that's just...not really interesting to me. Which is a shame, because the rest of the game seems pretty cool. But that MMO side? Screw that.

I was an exclusively solo player until a few weeks into TKK... then soloing became difficult. Until TKK I never bothered with raids or the hard strikes and I was able to max my level then... but with the new light system that is simply not possible anymore. The loot system doesn't support solo players... so once you cross level 40 you don't really get loot you can use in the regular gameplay and the Taken events on the planets doesn't offer a chest or reward after killing the boss like what happened after fighting the wolves. It all feels so pointless now and the time spent doesn't advance you in any significant or worthwhile way. I had to stop when I realized the game made me angry and screaming at the screen... I simply do not have time for games that do not feel enjoyable and rewarding.

That's why I'm such a casual player. I'm VERY busy with work as it is. The first year I was in this gig, I didn't play any games for 6 months, but would still buy games I wanted to play. At one point my game shelf had 10 games I hadn't touched, half were still in cellophane wrap. I still have some games I haven't finished and a few I haven't even opened, but that's mostly because I don't like to start a game until I finish the last one. Destiny for me is good for a couple hours of distraction at best anyways but I prefer games I can come back to weeks or months later and not be left behind.

Well, to be clear, when I say "finish the game" I mean "finish the story." I don't really give a rip about maxing my level or my gear, except insofar as they allow me to finish the story.

If the game:

A) Doesn't have a story

or

B) Requires me to team up with randos to finish it

...then it probably isn't for me at this point. I like playing MP FPS games now and then, but I've come to really prefer co-op stuff over PvP, and even for that, I'd rather just get into a matchmaking thing that doesn't require a ton of legwork to find a team. But to be honest, I don't think I'll have the time to do, like, a 2-hour raid anymore.

Well, it is possible to finish all the story missions solo. Sure. And for that $30 is a pretty good price for both the original + 2 expansions + TKK.

Yeah you can finish the story missions for the first half of the game at level 20 or so I think. By TTK you do need to level up the light for your gear as right out the game you go from level 28 missions straight to level 31 missions. At level 40 I still take a beating from low level guys.

Yeah. I mean taking some damage would be okay but they're doing as much as the high level guys. I raided xur this morning, not his best offering but if nothing else i have several more exotic shards for infusing. I am going to keep the suros regime though as i need a year 2 primary exotic. I probably shoulda bought a second one. I hope these 3 of coins do something this time. It took 20 of them last week to get 3 exotics.

Eh, I just got Xcom 2. I think I'll hold off on this one, since it'll be mostly turn-based games and adventure games a la "Monkey Island" for me for a while.
