Dear Disney, I was wrong.

I have been a staunch supporter of the acquisition form the start. As both a fan and a financial advisor, I saw the huge potential this merger had to greatly increase the Star Wars brand in a very positive way. Using the Marvel acquisition as a template, it's clear Disney and Bob Iger have a deft hand at long term franchise building.

Well said Art although I've kind of seen this as a positive step from the beginning. More Star Wars from the people who have propelled Marvel to such heights seemed like a great idea. I was cautious but it looks like everything is moving in the right direction. :)

And don't forget Kathleen Kennedy's film producer work has included over 60 films, 120 Academy Award nominations, and over $11 billion worldwide including three of the highest grossing films in motion picture history. She's a powerhouse and Star Wars has a strong backbone with the Kennedy/Disney association.

My only fear regarding the acquisition of Lucas Film was how Disney was going to handle the fan base. Like what Lucas has become or not, he was pretty awesome to the fans over the years. You think Disney had any shows dedicated to "fan films" based on their property? Lucas not only took art in the show, he picked his personal favorites! He was much, much more open to sharing his assets than Disney has been. Anyone remember when you could go to star wars.com and literally download almost every sound effect they had on their site? I still have those files.

As of this writing, can't say we've lost anything... well, the expanded universe may have been declared non-canon, but it's still there. Dark Horse is about to bow out of making the Star Wars comics and they seem to be giving it the best heartfelt farewell they could give it.

Let's see where this goes.

I think people are overly paranoid on that front. They've owned marvel a lot longer than LFL and they've not cracked the whip on that stuff...they've got no reason to start now.

agreed. look how many Capt. America shields and Iron Man helmets are in the junkyard and project runs... nothing been shut down there.

Marvel has most definitely cracked their proverbial whip on their intellectual property. Especially most recently with Guardians of the Galaxy. Maybe doesn't happen here as much but it is happening. Whether that's a result of the Disney effect is hard to say.

Do you have examples of marvel cracking the whip? I'm not saying it isn't happening, I just don't know of any instances personally. I would think if Disney wanted to stop something they'd start with the "adult" looking versions of the Disney Princesses. Which would make me very sad.

There's been people who have produced Iron Man armor and Cap Shields that have been slapped with C&Ds. Most recently a couple of people, including members here, have been sent one in regards to producing Star Lord Helmets. It's not a heavy-handed all encompassing shutdown, but definitely enough to take note of.

Even pre-acquisition, Marvel has historically been much more litigious than Lucasfilm, so hard to say Disney is the reason for more recent C&D activities. I think Disney's experience with SW weekends at Disney World should certainly reinforce continuing their non-policy towards fan-made SW props and replicas; a recent announcement clarifying their position with the 501st is further evidence of that. Disney under Iger has always been a more hands-off approach with Pixar, Marvel, and now Lucas, so enforcing IP rights may be more up to those individual studios. The bottomline is, I believe Disney will allow fans to continue to play in this sandbox provided it isn't brand-damaging. When Iger's successor takes over in a few years though, who knows... could be a complete 180.

I'm starting to believe the new films are going in the right direction - original cast, throwbacks to the OT, new actors with talent, less CG and more practical FX - but hard to really believe anything until I see a first clip.

EDIT: Typed PT instead of OT, wow big mistake.

While I am cautiously optimistic about Ep. VII none of the things that you mentioned necessarily mean anything, look at the PT it too had a talented cast and look at what Lucas did with them? Less CG doesn't necessarily mean anything either nor is it guaranteed to be the case either, more practical sets and effects does not necessarily mean that there will be any less CG used or any better. To me it's all about how it's used, where it's used, and how well it's used that's important, if a CG ship works better than a practical one then by all means use CG, if a scene or shot would look/work better with a practical model then use that. I just don't want to see one or the other just for the sake of it regardless of what looks or works the best.

Amen Brother! As long as Disney is more hands off and lets their acquired film studio "Lucasfilm" do their job like they know how it will be really awesome! (I think we can thank Kathleen Kennedy for a lot of what is happening!)

I think Disney has proved, through Marvel Studios, that they can do hands off, and that it can be better that way. They really reap the benefits in a situation like that.

They seem to be trying very, very hard to make sure it's not prequel-esque. When it comes out it will not satisfy everyone, but I have moved from the 'I hope it's good' more towards the 'this might be really good' if it comes together properly.

Amen! Couldn't have said it better.
