DC Rebirth #1

(kinda digging the throwback logo)

EDIT: Thought it important to note, just as the reviews do, DO NOT spoil yourself. Don't skip to the end, try not to spoil online. It is important to take the story in from start to finish.

So that was awesome, and weird, and touching, and with many, many questions to be answered. Did anyone else read it?

I haven't been following every single issue prior to this, so I just made sure that I caught Justice League #50 (Pretty enjoyable, lot of quite weird/freaky stuff going on) and Superman #52 (short, relatively simple, imagine it has more emotion for a long time reader of that 52 series) before I grabbed DC Rebirth #1. And bloody hell, this comic managed to have me tearing up slightly. I'm quite glad that it half preys on my nostalgia, and half sets up for new stories. Because thats almost exactly where I'd like to jump in and follow a new run of comics for a change. So really looking forward to a few new titles though my bank account isn't.

I won't spoil anything for anyone, but it'd be good to know your thoughts?

So,

In picking up the latest batman, tmnt cross over (only dc book i've bought since the 90s)..I decided to give rebirth a try.

confusing since I didn't keep up with it.
how do they explain that this superman from another earth is suddenly here?

And then I saw this in the back.

stupid. stupid...stupid!

Having Super WOMAN just like having BAT WOMAN totally degrades Batgirl and Supergirl...who are far above and away fan favorites.
What's the point of having a woman and girl character? don't they just cancel each other out? it's like having two Krypto's. one is enough!

And Chinese superman. are they really that desperate to get into the china market that they are being so blatant about it?
the ONLY one of those previews that looked interesting was lex superman. seeing lex step up now that superman is gone to truly 'change the world' in a good way could make an interesting story. but the o ther two? oy.

although, that being said, so long as Super WOMAN, isn't a PERMANENT new character, lois having powers could be fun for just a few issues. so long as they really delve into it.

I don't know about SuperWoman, but Batwoman is her own character and has nothing to do with batgirl. She doesn't even have anything to do with Batman, not at first at least, she just got inspired by the batman. I don't see how it degrades Batgirl in any way... Heck, she pre-dates Batgirl by several years in the comics !

I talked about this kind of thing just recently and I'll say it here what bugs me about the two big American comics:

The heroes are basically immortal so you have to make some real convoluted stories to keep it fresh and interesting,it also becomes some kind of epic paper soap opera and can cause any one over ten years old to have a stroke.

In the west I think one of the best characters for overall sense with the age of it is The Phantom as it's generational and you have somebody stepping in to take over....the problem I can see the big two have with this is like a hollywood superstar they'd be loath to do away with an "iconic" character like, say,Bruce Wayne or his nemesis the Joker or Riddler et cetera,so they try to force a character that's been around for eighty odd years already to be around for another century or more and it gets stupid.

They ALWAYS have to bring back the star of the show, they ALWAYS have to keep cranking it out, they may take a veer to grab certain markets (gays are popular now! who're we gonna make gay?? Women??? who can we gender swap??) but they always go back to the same guy and the same villains.

Big meh.

Why I prefer Manga and anime, there's a few characters/shows that get brought back but there's an honest break or they try something new (look at stuff like Macross) in the states only characters I still follow is Deadpool and Hellboy,I watch the Marvel and DC movies but,for now at least,it's a different animal and if/when they try to reboot and keep things alive we'll see how that goes (AKA we get a new Tony,or Logan,or Steve after the actors move on from the characters)

In the end NOTHING surprises me when it comes to DC/Marvel.

huh...

I never heard of her at all until the paul dini mystery of the batwoman dc movie. was she a one shot then, or recurring?

I didn't care for the movie at the time, because to me, it just made batgirl seem kind of like an after thought. even more so in that recent 'family of batmen' movie. all those bat characters come in, and the last shot is poor barbra swinging in with not much left to do other than to remind people she's still around. kind of like 'it's a mad mad mad world' where the three stooges have nothing left to do cause their no longer zany enough to fit in with the rest of the crowd of new characters ;o).

barbra seems to have struck more of a chord with people, and that's why she's in alot more.

The Mystery of the Batwoman film has pretty much nothing to do with the Batwoman from the comics, who is kind of a female Bruce Wayne actually. Wealthy socialite, dead mother, decides to dress like a bat (after seeing batman in action) and fight crime. I'm not extremely well versed in her history, but recently she had a few comics after the Crisis story line, where they made her a lesbian too. I've never actually read any of her comics, only panels here and there, but she used to deal mostly with more supernatural stuff and didn't cross over much with Batman, so she's definitely not threatening Barbara's place. She's definitely no side-kick ! More like a copy-cat.

If anyone is interested in picking up some of the Batwoman series it was really good when J.H. Williams III was drawing it. Had a very cool visual style along with some fairly gritty writing. I think his run started right after the Batman R.I.P. storyline in Detective comics around 2009.

Kind of ironic that your main complaint is that the main characters are narratively immortal and yet one of your few remaining characters that you follow literally cannot die. :D

I do get what you're saying of course, but if you started applying that logic properly, you'd never read an original story unless you had prior knowledge that the main protagonist character can and will die or conclude their story...

For instance, do you feel the same way about James Bond?

I love reading/watching/listening to stories of all kinds, and I love comic stories specifically because they have that unique longevity about them. There is a rich tapestry of history, as convoluted as it can get.

Whereas I also enjoy one shot stories where you never hear from that character again, provided that it is a good story.

I think BOTH Deadpool and Hellboy are basically "immortal" but in DP's case it's all rip on the comics universe,in HB's case.....he's a demon.

James Bond is more-or-less a series of reboots and only with the most recent ones have they retold some of the origin stuff, but in his case I didn't really care for a lot of the old films/stories (I watched them but can't anymore, too dumb) and prefer the newer ones, also when this part is "over" and Craig is done I consider the series done,if they do/don't try to tie it to the next guy playing him depends, they could just start a new set with a new Bond and just gloss over the last guy like they always have.

So Bond is very different compared to the comics scene.

The back of the comics you linked NeilT made my eyes roll so hard I swear they almost got stuck.

Never been a fan of manga/anime, I dont see the appeal, its just too whacky for me, cant get into it.

If all you've seen is the wacky you need to dig a bit, there is some very twisted and crazy stories out there,go look up "Doomed Megalopolis" or "Perfect Blue" and get back to me.

Will do. Are those both self contained stories, can I get a trade paperback that covers everything?

Those are both animes, manga go look at "Higurashi When They Cry" pretty much all of it is self contained, they may be long but there is a definite end to them.

Those are just suggestions,if you like or get curious I can toss more stuff out there,Doomed Megalopolis was also a live action film, and of course if you haven't go check out the one anime/manga that's making waves here on RPF now:Ghost in the shell it's a damn good series with some out there ideas and some real questions on our positions as "human"

So I've currently tried out:

Rebirth
Batman: R #1
Superman: R #1
Green Arrow: R #1
Green Lantern: R #1
Action Comics #957
Detective Comics #934
Aquaman: R #1
The Flash: R #1
Wonder Woman: R #1

Because I fancied just seeing what caught my eye. I don't plan on following them all. So far, I think I will be continuing to follow,

Superman: R #1
Green Arrow: R #1
Green Lantern: R #1
Action Comics #957 (potentially)
The Flash: R #1

And might pop into the others occasionally.

For me, the others didn't quite click - either the writing or the artwork didn't quite for work me. Detective comics, I thought the art was great, but the story is lacking a little. Aquaman, it just felt a little...cartoony. And I don't mean that in the art sense. I could see what they were aiming for. And it'll probably work out. Wonder Woman was a bit strange - I didn't quite get a feel for what the actual aim of the story was. I get it, but I dont necessarily buy it.

The others had some solid writing, interesting art work, and enjoyed the threads of Rebirth running through them. I'm very interested in following pre-52 Superman in this continuity. The added value of seeing him and Lois raise a son is great.

While I'm not familiar with those titles I do agree with the general sentiment, like anime, manga isn't a genre, it's a medium much like comic books are and they cover every genre out there. If you're a sports buff then there are mangas that are sports based, baseball and basketball manga seem to be popular. If you like horror there are horror mangas out there, some are very Lovecraftian. Sci-fi your thing, there's plenty of sci-fi manga along with fantasy, teen romance, straight romance, gay romance, slice of life stories, basically every possible genre and theme imaginable.

One manga that you might want to check out if you want something really intense and a bit crazy, check out Attack on Titan. It's still ongoing right now, maybe about a dozen or so volumes in and the first season of an anime adaptation came out a while back. It's quite different and definitely worth checking out.

I hate attack on titan :lol I mean...yea check it out if you've never seen/read it but, seriously, there's been far better out there.

So I've been following a few of the titles.

It's actually now

Detective Comics, Action Comics, Superman, Justice League and Titans that I'm now following.

Titans is probably the most compelling, it's close to the Rebirth story itself - though there's only been two issues.

Justice League is getting better as it goes and started off a bit weird, but I love the dynamic of New Bats and Modern Age Supes - cautious trust building etc. Modern Age Supes is great to follow in this new world too - the dynamic of him having a son with Lois is excellent. It doesn't always land but I'm intrigued as the story goes. Detective comics has got better as its gone too, enjoying the focus on Batwoman and her father etc.

Anyone else following any? I kind of dropped off Green Arrow and Green Lantern.
