I recently became aware of David Stipes, and recently exchanged emails with him. He has had long outstanding career in now we would call the old school world of matte painting. In short matte is to give an illusion of something that really isn't there in life, but looks to be their in film or a photograph. This was a common camera trick in the 60's, and 70's, but in some cases is still used today while mostly done with computers now in the CG digital world.
A small list of some of David's credit are "V" The Final Battle, Buck Rogers, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Lawnmower Man, and the list goes on. He also did some work for Universal Hartland on a subject that I am really into, and that was the Universal Studio's Tram Ride called the Battle of Galactica. An approximate 3 minute start to finish event that you were captured by the Cylons, taken to the Baseship, and about to be exterminated when the hero Apollo comes and saves the day as then you make your escape.
Well before the extreme time line of building the set Uni wanted to gear up to promo the show, and filming on sight wasn't going to work because of the construction taking place. The filming side was taken off site and a Cylon tank was hauled over, and a false door wall was built. This is when David stepped in and took the photo, and Jena Holman painted in the rest. Check out David's Blog to see the outstanding work he and Jena did.
