Have you had a chance to listen to the commentary? They really go into detail about the environment in which they were filming and it was no pic-nic at all. Very good stuff and like the behind the scene photos, really adds more dimension to the film itself.

And the commentaries and videos on the extras disc are just great. Completely amazing that they put so much value on the screen, especially with the amount of improv and changes to the story. One of the great things about Blomkamp (apart from the fact that he actually knows and likes SF and seems likely not to abandon the genre like, say, Ridley did) is that he's stlil working comparatively cheaply for the next movie; after D9 he could probably have asked for any budget he wanted but it sounds like it won't crack $100M. Good on him...
