I used to do a lot more models, through trial and error, I found that spray foam insulation works well to make the melted metal effects as it let's light through at just the right amount. This holds true for making rocket exaust (cotton stuffing works well for that as well like the stuffing in old stuffed animals - as a side note). Then just hit the dollar store in your area as they always have cheap lights. Kind of a cool effect are those cheap flickering battery candles they have.
I wouldn't mind making a version of that, if it would be ok with you? I always like to ask before I use someone's idea. And btw what a fantastic idea.
