Creators Front for Diversity in Comics

As insane as it sounds.... I think the same is sort of true with Hollywood, especially since Hollywood is more concerned with pre-existing content than original work (unless you're a big-time player, where you can do any original work you want).

I'm all for creator owned comics. Especially when comics aren't as huge as they were in the 90s.

I havent bought a comic since that marvel civil war crud....comics sucks these days...ridiculous prices for variant covers for the same darn comic..comic book stores pulling the rare comics to jack up the prices when they are first released.....the grading of comics etc etc....horrible cross overs.....ruined the comic industry......

Yeah the variant covers in the 90s nearly killed the industry. I mainly go for artist owned stuff. the local shop is holding it's own, i thought it would fold after the original owner died though.

For me, it was the variant covers, the start of Image comics and the meteoric rise of Spawn (which I liked, but couldn't afford to buy back issues of), and the splitting of what had previously been three X-titles (New Mutants, Uncanny X-Men, and X-Factor) into like fifteen titles.

I've gotten back into stuff via trades, but that's all I'm interested in now.

For the record, though, creator-owned comics have been around in one form or another since at least the late 70s. Check out old stuff like Scout from Eclipse Comics, or stuff from First Comics. Dark Horse has also been around for ages and while they make most of their money (I'd bet) off of selling Star Wars and other licensed property comics (AvP stuff, Buffy, etc.), they still act as a vehicle for creator-owned comics. No superheroes, either.

Just when I thought I was out, comics pulled me back in!

Everyone should read Larry's comics. DO IT:

I agree! In fact, I love the RPF so much that anyone who wants a copy of The Black Diamond trade paperback can just PM me with their address and I'll send them one.

I warn you; it's wacky, and if you don't like Two Lane Blacktop or Vanishing Point or Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry you probably won't like this. But it's our love-letter to 70s drive-in movies and if you like design and word-play and big ideas, you could do worse. Also, it's free, did I mention? :lol

Few words from Eric Powell (creator of The Goon)

What’s all this Creator-Owned Talk?
Steve Niles (creator of 30 Days of Night) also shares his thoughts on Creator Owned Comics.

I'm not on facebook, but I take it that it's about ownership of the comics they make? Anybody want to cut and paste it?

Wasn't Spawn owned by the creator? If you can do it good for you. The Watchmen writer thought he would own it, if they abandoned the idea for a year. It took him a while to realize they'd never do it.

Creator owned comics is a fine idea but for me I have to wade through 99% poo to get to the very few and far between gems. Not to sound rough but many "creator owned" books end up being small press or self published because no company is willing to put their name on it.:cool

Just another reason why Larry is one of the best guys 'round!
