Cornelius: planet of the apes

Think I'm going to mold this before Michelangelo. Any suggestions for the teeth? Were those added on later?

Thank you!

The teeth were slushed latex and added onto the foam latex. I just learned that recently from Bri at Apemania.

Are you going to slush this in latex?

Most likely. I'm new to this whole thing but I think slushing it would make it possible to coat everything but also give it the thinness it needs (depending on how many coats). Not sure what to do with the teeth yet..but glad to know they were put on after the fact.

Did some more work today!

Question.. did the first movie mask have any sort of texture (minus the wrinkles)? LIke skin texture? Cant seems to find anything about that.

Looking good, although if you're aiming for ultimate accuracy, I'd make the comment that the muzzle is too broad for Cornelius. I feel it ought to be slimmer. IMHO, but seeing as I couldn't even do it as well as you've done it, I'm just an armchair critic (and Apes fan).

Hi Batfan10,

Looking very good! I was glad to find your sculpt! I'm also working on two apes (gorillas) and have been collecting a lot of reference material. Like you, I started with a larger muzzle and had to sculpt it smaller... it turns out that the actual muzzles were smaller than I had imagined them to be (and just looking at the makeup with the wig it's tricky to scale it).

Like micdavis says, the jaws are not much wider than the actors lips. I also discovered an interesting thing about the jaw from the film apes... it does not extend below the bottom of the actor's chin. See these pics below, you can clearly see the actor's chin with the ape jaw sitting above it:

Having said that, Galen from the TV show seems to be VERY different.
The prosthetic actually goes UNDER the chin. It's hard to tell if the jaw is actually any BIGGER or if the extension on the sides and below the jaw is just a thin layer of latex flush with the actor's lifemask... in any case it's very different from Cornelius.

Anyways, just something to keep in mind, as I noted that your ape jaw seems to go quite a ways below the actor's chin (as below), you may want to consider sliding the jaw up some so the bottom of the ape's jaw & actor's chin are more aligned... the downside is, of course, moving it may require some changes in the upper muzzle to sync up with it...

I hope that helps! Looking forward to see more!

Thank you for all the reference photos! Roddy McDowell's video was a life saver!

I noticed that about the chin. But, when the sculpt is done I am doing to push the chin up again (to a more natural position). I moved it down there so it was easy to sculpt the inner mouth. :) I'll have to check your sculpt out as well!

I agree about the ape jaw. You don't really realize that until you have sculpted it.

Those are way awesome reference photos!!!

Looking Good!!!

Here's a great page on creating ears for foam latex:
*********Foam latex step by step 2*********

If you want a short-cut, here's some latex ears you can order for under $8 and paint them to look like Cornelius:

And here's some great ear shot's from Dan Morgan / Tom Rubalcava's site:
