Cobra Commander - Roquefert WIP

Hello RPF!

So I started on a Cobra Commander outfit as so many people at Chicago Wizard World thought my wife looked like the Baroness I figured why not!

I will be going for this in the end:

So far I have put together the pepakura Cobra Commander Helmet by BlackKaos but I still need to resin, fiberglass, etc...

I have however had access to a 3d printer and have created the cobra emblems for the Cloak.

I then proceeded to create a mold and cast one to see how well it works.

I have also started to work on sewing together the suit. I was able to find a pattern that closely resembles the uniform worn in the pictures above and have started cutting them out and putting it together. This will take a lot more time as it is my first time sewing anything like a suit before.

Anyways let me know what you all think!

Will be providing updates as I go along. Also if enough people are interested I may make a JY thread for pulls for the cobra emblem.

P.S. - Forgot that I had this button photo too! Was playing around more with the 3d printer and created it for the outfit. Not exactly finished yet but is a good start. Will need some sanding and then a mold made so I can create a few more for the Jacket.

Update on the suit.

I had finished cutting out all the pattern pieces and now have started to sew them together. This is my progress so far.

Here is the back:

The back collar:

And putting together the front pieces. These were more of a pain as I had to fold them inside out after sewing to get the seams right. The white fabric is the interlining to make the lapels a little stronger.

Got both front pieces, the back collar, and the back done. Now I just need to create a pattern for the sleeves as the pattern I bought did not have one. Found a great tutorial here, Create a Custom Sleeve Pattern - CraftStylish.

Will post pics when I work on it!

That's it for today!

As a person who has dressed as Cobra Commander I commend you for your work.
For my helmet I modded a Dath Vader helmet, and used the costume and visor from a costume I bought.
For the pins I just sculpted them out of sculpey and painted the design on them.
So the effort you are putting into this costume is great.

Are you going to make a scepter?

Hey Alpha,

Thanks for the compliments! Yes I plan to make everything in the pictures at the beginning. My friend and his brother are going to be working on Destro and Major Bludd costumes and I will be doing my Wife's Baroness costume after this. Will have a good group of Cobra!

I already have located or have ready to be assembled everything in the original pictures down to the Cobra Shoulder Knot. As far as the scepter I saw in another Cobra Commander post by Bobby Cooper how his friend made his staff from PVC and Bondo and I may give that a shot. I don't want a full on staff but more of the scepter length ~3ft. I was going to sculpt the headpiece and then see about getting a nice rosewood or cherry dowl and thread it into the pvc base of the head.

This afternoon I'm going to be working on creating the pattern for the sleeves using the guide in the link above. I will post progress pics good or bad heh.

As someone who has already done this for a friend (not the statue per say but a version similar), I am very impressed with your start. I molded my buttons from SLA prints (the only way back then to get 3D printing) and cast them in metal, man was that a pain! I also could never conquer the two way mirror trick on his visor, so I'm curious to see how you handle that. I look forward to your progress.

Hey Wonder,

Thanks! Actually for the visor I found a company that does the 1 way mirror window tinting similar to what is used in police departments. They were able to send me a sample and it looks great! The only time when you can barely see through it is in very low light and at very specific angles, so it may work pretty well. Here are some pics of the samples.

Once I finish up the Jacket I will take a break from tailoring (before the pants) and work on the helmet. Here is a pic of my sleeve template I made today.

So far so good! Now just to figure out when and how to attach the thing to the jacket! To google I go.

Ok so doing some research on how to attach the sleeves and it does not appear to hard. I will need to sew them closed first and then attach them via the shoulder points aligned with the shoulder seam. Easy right? I'll post pics after I sew the fronts to the back.

Quick update.

I 3D printed my belt buckle today for the suit. Looks amazing! I also printed out a larger button (which turned out too large, so I'll reprint it tomorrow). The previous button is going to work great for the shoulders and sleeves while this slightly larger button will be for the chest.

Here is a pic of the two from today. Haven't had much time due to Master's classes and work full time but I plan to have a better update on the Jacket this weekend.

So... umm... Opps!

I made the wrist about 2 inches too tight and the whole sleeve about 1 inch too short. Oh well, it should be easy to modify the pattern. It fit's my wife's arm great though! Lol!

Assisted my friend with his Doom pep file. We are going to convert it to a Destro mask after all is said and done. Here are the beginning pics of putting it together.

I'm going to rework my sleeve pattern this weekend if I have time from papers that have to be written.

Some progress on the jacket. I have finally figured out how to attach the sleeves and I have added some epaulets for the cobra military cord. Will try to attach the 2nd sleeve tonight and then work on button placement as well as the back collar and finishing.

Let me know what you think! First time sewing a jacket and it has a very, very, very steep learning curve heh.

Thanks Alpha,

I finished attaching both sleeves last night. I don't quite have a great range of motion in the jacket (can't lift arms above parallel to ground) but I believe it is mostly due to the fact I had a Vest pattern that I added sleeves of my own creation. It will work for general use but Just I won't be able to play Basketball in it (Darn!).

I need to finish casting my buttons and paint them to attach to the jacket and do some hemming around the edges but other than that it is mostly done. Next will be starting on the pants!
