Clone Trooper Helms - to buy MR or not?

I'm debating whether to buy an LE MR Clone Trooper helmet to paint up. Are there any other decent helmet options out there?

Thanks,

HH

How about a Java Monkey bucket? I have a JM3 and it is great.

For whatever its worth, I purchased an MR white helmet with the plans on eventually painting it up as a shock trooper (whenever I get around to finishing that costume). I got it for around $300 shipped. Figure I could liquidate the stand and make a few bucks back that way.

I haven't seen many fan made helmets, so I'm not sure how to compare. I'm pretty happy with the MR purchase.

It all depends on your size and how much work you want to do. MR will require the least amount of work and is medium sized. Javamonkey is a small amount of work but large sized. The OSCS helmet (linked above) is the smallest helmet but requires the most amount of work (a lot of work actually to make it wearable).

Thanks for the replies. I have yet to see an MR in person, so the "small, medium, large" doesn't do much for me. How do these sizes relate to an AP bucket? My AP fits snug on my melon . . .

If someone could PM me some info on Javamonkey (I've seen pics of his work - looks top-notch), I'd appreciate it. ;)

If you are 6 foot or taller, JM3 is definitely the way to go. If you are 5'10 or under then the MR or OSCS is the way to go. Between 5'10 and 6' you can go either way. BTW you can pick up an MR on ebay for around $250 so price really isn't an issue on any of the helmets.

The MR Clone is a very nice lid...I found one for $250 shipped off of ebay. I will never wear it as it's just for display but it is a very tight fit....mind you I'm 6'4" 250 lbs. It would probably fit a smaller head quite well. Very comfy padding and generally very well finished. I would say it's comparable in size to my AP helmet, which is also a tight fit on me.

WC's armor looks pretty nice tho.... :thumbsup

Well, I'm 5'10", about 180. I'm thinking that this will initially be for display, but I'd like the option of being able to wear it. I recently finished a TD suit and I'm not sure my wife will tolerate another big project for a while. :lol I figure if I start with a helmet I can ease her back into the idea that I'm going to start building another suit.

What I like about the MR option is there is no building involved and the interior is already finished. That's a good point that the prep work to get it ready to paint might make that irrelevant.

That JM3 looks amazing.

At 5'10, 180 you're the prototypical size for a clone. Since you want to display it first, I would get an MR. You can display it as soon as you get it and later down the road if you so choose you can mod it for trooping.

I'll definitely be painting and weathering it. Is there a lot of prep work on an MR to do that? It seems that with good masking, I shouldn't have to do much work . . .

Thanks Brother.

I'll second that. Great looking armor. What is the JM3 helmet made of? Does it come with a face shield or any interior?

I will compare the JM and MR

The JM is blank inside, no gutting required. I put a $5 fan in and bought a cheap hard hat at Lowes and cut out the 4 connection points and just glue in place. If you leave the MR as is, and troop in it, you will suffocate. The MR will need to be stripped of all foam lining, then the same items re-added like the JM ...

The padding is nice for display, but if you troop any, the foam lining becomes very warm, and there is no room for a fan with the foam. My step brother owned the MR in the image. He said it fogged up within 2-3 minutes.

Ah, good point. The interior of the MR sure looks nice, but I could see it being impractical for trooping. I guess I need to decide what I want this helmet to be used for.

Thanks.
