Clean vs. dirty?

I find it interesting that there is a major difference between stormtrooper and TIE pilot costumes, outside of the obvious. It seems like the majority prefer their troopers to be dirty, and the dirtier the better. It also seems like most pilots, epecially the helmets, look minty fresh.

Just curious as to why that is. :D

My theory: Troopers are front liners, and grunts get dirty. TIE fighters don't have shields, so most pilots that go up, don't come down. :cry They don't have a chance to get dirty.

I'm going the dirty route on my Fett, so my newly acquired TIE helmet will get the pristine treatment,

Just following the trend.

Dont get confuse... Stormtrooper MUST NOT to be weathered... BUT SANDTROOPER MUST ..

I mean, with Stormtrooper you can always be a DEATH STAR shinny and new stormtrooper... no need to weather it... but off course, if you want a sandtrooper, it must be weathered...

Same happens with TIEs... no need to be weathered (and not much logic). ;)

My 2 cents

I still say you see a lot of stormtroopers (without the sandtrooper's shoulder pauldron) that are dirtied up.

I realize TIEs wouldn't get dirty with dirt or sand, but they could get greasy and grimy. You just never see it.

And that's why Tie pilots don't carry blasters - there's no need. They can't land anywhere, so there's never a chance of landing in hostile territory. The only time they see land, is when they're crashing towards it. :lol

This does bring up a good question, though. How is it that the Xwing pilot's helmets are full of blaster burns, and dirt and junk..... but their suits are nice and clean? Why don't they clean the helmets? Or, a better question - how do the helmets get so dirty in the first place?? They are inside a sealed cockpit. I'd think that if you had that dirty of a helmet, either your ship had huge problems, and would probably crash, or if you got blaster marks/gunk, your head would be sticking out in space.

I have scuffs and scrapes, along with plenty of black smudges on my armor... I don't clean them off. I didn't add any, they just are from wear and tare. I will admit, when it was all NEW and fresh, it did look nice, but I don't need to touch it up or polish it.

Exactly what I do too.

When out trooping I've been asked that question while standing next to a Sandtrooper, so this is pretty much my explanation....

TIE pilots are just fly boys, we don't do any maintenance on the fighters, that's what the engineers are for. We sit in the pilots lounge ready to scramble. After our sortie, whoever made it back, docks their TIE to be readied for the next one, while us pilots go to debriefing then prepare for the next scramble. If we're called to do parade duties for Imperial PR purposes, we're issued with a sidearm or even an E11 due to being out in public.

That's my take on it.

Anyway, I have answers for almost every question I might get asked while trooping as a TIE.

Oh and for the record, I"M NOT *&%$#@ DARTH VADER.... :angry

:lol Fellow pilots know what I mean by my above statement :D

Cheers,

Kraig

dirty looks much better, more character.

Clean looks like a museum piece, and we all know star wars type stuff is far from that.

I may even say 'pristine' stuff is almost EU...

I think it's pretty obvious that generally the troopers, both TIE pilots and storm would have to keep their armour clean, unless on duty on a terrain that would generally mean the armour would get worn and dirty on a daily basis.

TIE pilots would generally wear clean armour too because like already mentioned, there is no need for them to get dirty as they only wear their uniforms while piloting a TIE fighter. They have mechanics to sort out their TIEs and if they did have to get down and dirty, IÂ’m sure theyÂ’d have a set of work overallsÂ…itÂ’s not like the Empire are short of funds.

Just think of it in terms of the military now a days...it depends on location of where you are posted, but you generally do have to keep your uniform presentable and tidy. ItÂ’s not rocket science, these guys are part of the Empire and are not like your average bounty hunter, who do not need to represent an organisationÂ…I mean you just have to look how clean the Death Star is to see that presentation matters. Would you trust/respect a Policeman/London Royal guard if they wore dirty/beat-up uniform?

In the terms of your own armour to whether itÂ’s clean or dirty, I think itÂ’s entirely up to you, but I donÂ’t think thereÂ’s much question as to why TIE pilots are cleaner than troopers, itÂ’s like asking whether Darth Vaders armour should be beat-up and dirty.

Well, if I remember correctly, since the DVD's came out, people have discoverd that those so callled "DEATH STAR shinny and new stormtroopers" are NOT so clean and are pretty dirty and beat up after all.
You just couldn't see it and they "appeared" clean because of the VHS veiwing quality.

So a squeaky clean trooper unweatherd would be out of the norm and look out of place.

Shouldn't we look towards our present day military. While in barricks..... inspections, drills and training require polished boots and clean pressed uniforms. And in the heat of battle, there is little time nor the facilities for cleaning and polishing. Just an opinion.

I also took it that the troopers on Tatooine were kinda left to their own. Nobody really checked up on them, or did inspections and stuff. They got dirty, and figured there was no need to clean the armor - it'd just get dirty again.

What about the Xwing helmets? Nobody has comments on that?

The Rebel pilots helmets, and even the Endor Commandos.

Well Lucas probably intentionally made to look as is they were recycled from pilot to pilot as they were never replaced after a battle, being a Rebel Army I'm sure it was meant to show that their Equpment was not Brand New like that of the empire.
as for the clean uniforms, I guess they could wash them or were able to make new ones cheaply.

Thats what I always felt

I agree. I think the X-wing pilot helmets would be far more expensive to replace than a cockpit jumpsuit, therefore the helmets get recycled and some of them have spent a lot of time rolling around in a cargo container or in a storage locker, as well as on the ground during situations when pilots are planetside. I'm sure that death star troopers and the troops that we saw on bespin at cloud city were meant to look pristine but wearing the costumes on set was alone to scuff them up and give them a used look. In the star wars universe they probably did polish their armor regularly for duty such as the welcoming committes that we would see every time a shuttle landed. Sandtroopers should be dirty but many costumers go overboard. If I ever do a sandtrooper I wont be airbrushing it. I'll just stick to the old methods they used in the 70s. Some paint, a brush, a towel to wipe it off, and lots of scuffing.
I'm content with a clean trooper and tie though. My biker scout will recieve a bit of weathering but not overkill.
