Chun Li from Street Fighter

Hello everyone. For Halloween this year, I am planning to recreate Chun Li's blue outfit. Should be fairly easy. I am proposing to get a blue cheongsam, modify it and spray paint my silver boots white. I am kind of excited at how easy this outfit will be to put together.

For those that do not know me, I was dressed up as Zira at Wondercon 2009 and I just LOOOOOOOVE costumes. Hello fellow apes.

I predict that you will get a LOT of blokes replying to this thread asking to see PICS! LOL Don't say I didn't warn ya! :rolleyes

Good choice for a costume though... instantly recognisable by anyone who is now suffering middle-aged arthritis as a result of trying to master Chun Li's 'spinning bird kick' back in the early 90's :lol

And also topical with StreetFighter 4 now on the modern consoles.

Good luck with the costume - relatively easy to assemble from found clothes but tricky to get the overall look if you ignore the lil' details....

Cheers,
John

Hmm...have to study the costume more. Can't find a cheongsam in the right color. I'll go to Chinatown and see if I can find one ready made in the right color (without patterns). If I can't find any, I may have to sew the outfit entirely from scratch. I better start practicing my roundhouse kicks, too. Yeah...right.

My roommate wants a Chun Li costume, which means I'll probably be watching this thread for when she bothers me enough to make it...

Hey Jessica, I must have missed the thread where you posted your Zira costume over here. I saw it elsewhere, and it was fabulous.

Thanks. I never posted the Zira costume here on this forum but now that you mention it, I might.

Yay! An RPFer with the same first name as me! Hello, Jessica. ^_^ I'd love to see pics as well. I'm not too familiar with it though. I was always more of a Mortal Kombat fan. :p Growing up (here), you were either into Street Fighter or MK.

Would something like this work, or should I just give up and sew it from scratch? Oh...I know nothing about Chun Li except that I have seen the costume and know I can make myself one.

You would probably be best off getting the raw yardage of dark blue silk and a good pattern for a cheongsam or -- better, probably -- an ao dai. The latter has slits that go up to the waist on both sides as part of the design, and wouldn't require modding in that department. The cheongsam usually only has one slit, and it doesn't go all the way up. I don't know if you have patterns already, but I find the ones at Folkwear to be pretty good and inexpensive. Here are their cheongsam and ao dai.

Either way, you'll still have to mod the cap sleeves and add the correct trim. But it should be less of a headache from the pattern end. When possible, I prefer building from scratch over tailoring an existing piece.

Good luck, and have fun. :)

I guess it would depend on how much that one costs, looks like you'd have to do some pretty heavy modding. It also depends on which Chun-Li you are planning on making. From the game (which one), up coming movie, cartoon, the one you posted at the beginning, etc.
I've attached a couple from the Street Fighter II game by Capcom (or at least tried)

Along with the research for the costume, I think you should do a massive amount of squats to develop some insane, muscular thunder thighs. Chun-Li can't have bony legs :lol:lol:lol
