So I was going to wait to post this when I was finished, but I was just too excited! For whatever reason, last week I felt like finally doing a project I'd wanted to undertake since I first watched Firefly a few years ago: Mal's pistol. I've got a pretty limited budget when it comes to costumes and props, and unfortunately that sometimes means sacrificing a bit in terms of screen accuracy. For this, I've been able to keep costs fairly low by using materials I already had on hand. Most of the body of the gun is made from a few different thicknesses of acrylic sheets and held together with 2 part epoxy. It's built around a tiny $3 cap gun from Walmart which actually is relatively close in size and shape to the revolver inside of the original Frontier Model B/ oil can gun/ whatever you want to call it. I'm using a very nice drawing I saw somewhere around the RPF as a template for my acrylic pieces. I've also used a couple of screws, plastic drinking straws, and pvc inside the barrel. I still need to fill some seams and gaps, make a sight, glue on the back panels, make an ammo clip, and put on some epoxy putty so I have place to attach the handle, but I'm hoping to finish the build part soon and start painting this weekend.
