Can someone please help me understand the 'Convention' community?

While I havn't atteneded the big name cons, like Comic Con or Dragoncon, there have been plenty in Minnesota.

For those who don't understand the dressing up part of the con, I see these convensions as a showcase of very talented people who make their costumes, props and makeup effects in celebration of something they enjoy and draw others who share that enjoyment. It can be a real ice breaker to start up conversations, meet new people and make friends. As a hobbist in replicating props, I often see some fantastic props and will ask what materials and techniques were used in making it. Most people are very willing to share their knowlege and experience. The same can be said about costumes.

For me, it was the RPF before there was an RPF.

Thank you very much! I appreciate it! Do you happen to know of a con that will have a lot of Harry Potter stuff, even if it isn't HP centered, but would have some props or costumes or, well, a panel of hp actors or producers or writers, etc.? :)

I went to Leaky Con (A Harry Potter con in Florida) and even though it was supposed to be one of the biggest HP cons, it was small to me...and boring.

I like the Potter crowd at Dragon Con better because most of them are more serious costumers. They host a Yule Ball there every year too. It's just ok. There are lots of teenagers, which tend to annoy me, but I guess that goes with the territory when you're into something that was aimed at young adults.

I wish that Warner Bros would endorse a real large scale Potter con like Lucasfilm does with the Star Wars Celebration. I think they're missing out.

I think the best you are going to get is their "Celebration" at Wizarding World. If it was going to happen I imagine it would have happened before the final movie.
