Hey All!

This is something i've been meaning to put together for a while!

Having been a fan of FFVII since i was a kid, i've always wanted my own Buster Sword, just never the space to keep one given its huge size.

Having just moved into a bigger house i decided my walls are a little too blank!

I started off attempting to do a cheap pep but it just didn't turn out right. At which point i decided to move onto MDF, a material I'm far more familiar with and with help from my dad started construction!

I took a large sheet of 18mm MDF, cut out two large rectangles big enough for the blade, glued, clamped and screwed them together.
Then cut out the blade shape and used an electric planer to create the blade edge.

Once i was happy with the rough blade i moved onto the cross guard.

Four pieces of MDF glued, screwed and clamped. Attatching it to the blade was more interesting. I attached it two pieces at a time, the first two sheers are screwed into the blade and the second two into the first two sheets. The general idea is that as im not going to be doing battle with it, it doesn't need to be ridiculously sturdy lol

To fit the grip i used a 22mm auger drill bit and made a hole right through the cross guard and into the blade as far up as the first 'materia slot' (which at this point i also widened). That way i could insert a metal pipe to use as a support for the blade/cross guard and for the grip.

Scale wise i think its a little smaller than it should be but im still happy with it!

This is the latest photo.
I've started adding details to the cross guard, just need to add the round bevels (i intend to use mirror screws).

Next stage is the details on the grip under the cross guard, the pommel and then im going to wrap it with faux red leather.

The gross guard is going to get a coat of filler primer and then painted.

The blade is going to get wrapped in 'brushed steel' vinyl to give it an awesome metalic look.

Ill update it when i get more done!

Thanks for looking!

Looking awesome ! I still plan to do a foam version. But finding time is tough.

Thanks dude!!

If you're going to go foam id suggest something like polyurethane. Im considering using it for my next Buster Sword (gonna do the Crisis Core/Advent Children version). The only thing is you need to build decent supports inside to get it to stay rigid and straight. My other thought was to build a buck for each side of the sword and vacuum form one. I may try this and see how it turns out!

Quick update!

Managed to get some of the vinyl wrapping done today...and man was that hard lol One side turned out very well, the other...not so much lol but as its going on my wall it only needs to have one good side!

Shiny!....a little too shiny.. after all those battles it needed some weathering.

Its a start! The good thing about this 'brushed metal' vinyl is that it has a glossy surface, if you over weather you can rub it off and start again. At the moment i think there's a tad much so ill probably re work it a little to dial it down.

So far that's where I'm at, i have to add the vinyl to the rest of the gross guard and continue painting.

Stay tuned!
