Buckaroo Banzai II...... Bring back the fun.

A new Banzai would certainly look drool worthy but can contemporary filmaking capture the same fun and spirit of the original?

No, nor should that be its mission. Leave this already perfect movie alone, and let filmmakers tell the stories they want to tell without being shackled to the past.

I am in total dissagreement with all of your points, but that makes for an interesting place. Banzai is not just a movie, its a universe that screams to be further explored, the road taken to get there may or may not be to your approval, but to deny the journey brings nothing.

And to take the journey squelches the imagination of a thousand viewers. The rest of the "series" (since the only Banzai film to date was presented as part of an illusory franchise) is meant to exist in the mind of the viewer and thus enrich the experience of the one film. The sequel title graffiti'd on the dam is neither a promise nor an invitation, and to realize it would only disappoint.

The only thing graffiti'd on the dam was "BUCKAROO BANZAI." :)

I would love to see something new, even if it's a sort of hand-off type deal, where Buckaroo and Penny's kid takes over. And if Weller's not involved, can we at least have a real Amerasian actor as Buckaroo? But yeah, it has to be quirky and FUN most of all.

Edit: Blue Blaze Irregular Durango ;)

Rauch had written many Buckaroo stories before the final draft of "Across the Eighth Dimension" so he has that universe pretty much in mind for further stories.
However, the movie was a perfect balance of walking the razor's edge between camp and serious. I think making another at this point would be like trying to capture lightning in a bottle.

I cant see how the imagination of one person, apart from your good self, would be squelched by the journey. By holding whatever you consider to be sacred back from further exploration, it simply denies the many who want to see further adventures and if the original had been a success at the box office, we would be talking about a third movie right about now.

Heres the thing, to me a remake in absolutely no way detracts from the original even if it is an absolute stinker, how could it? You cant quantify if by making a hopeless turkey remake, you deny the opportunity for another, more deserving film to be made.

Lastly, if you read the first post, a remake was suggested as a probable introduction to the characters, apart from forty somethings, I would guess many members here have never seen the original. This thread was to inspire all things new Banzai, remake, reboot, rethink, prequel, sequel, shmequel, whatever. The original was big on ideas but short on cash, as a mug punter, Im willing to take the chance anything new will be supplied with both.

Blue Blaze Irregular Clothears.

Just did a quick calculation on the combined ages of the six viable actors/characters from the original Cavaliers, Banzai, Priddy, Prof, Perfect Tommy,Reno and New Jersey...387.

This, along with the fact some explanation of whats been going on for the last 30 years would be needed makes me think that a reboot would be the decision, thought about the Buckaroo Jnr route but that would need the introduction of a whole bunch of new characters, why take the risk they would be endearing?

Ive accepted the fact that very soon there is going to be a new Mad Max, a character I hold much closer than even old Buckaroo. If the new guy can do the job then I wont deny his effort, I`ll celebrate it, if he blows it or is given the wrong tools to work with I wouldnt revel in it or put the "told you so" hat on, would just be dissapointed, no biggie. Originals intact. Just looking forward to finding out. Applying the same outlook on any future Banzai projects.

The big problem with getting a sequel or remake produced at this point is that there may not be that many people interested in seeing it. BB never made any money to begin with and is simply considered a minor cult classic.

You mention that the rights to Blade Runner finally got sorted out but that is a different beast altogether. Blade Runner over the years has attained true classic status and the interest is far greater. No one may be interested in sorting out the rights issue if there is no monetary gain to be made.

W.D. Richter and Earl Mac Rauch have taken a few stabs at bringing new live-action BB to life since the film. That's where this came from:

BUCKAROO BANZAI - JET CAR TRAILER - YouTube

There was also a pitch to the SciFi Channel that showed promise but ultimately didn't go anywhere.

If/until the right pitch and the right backers meet up, we've still got the comics that the fine people at Moonstone Books have been producing for the past few years with the full blessing/co-operation of Rick and Mac.

Well I dont remember Total Rekall or RoboCop breaking box office records or being anything other than minor cult classics either but here we are. I would consider last years The Thing as a remake of a medium successful movie as well. What other remakes are totally in the works or near completion as we speak? Im tipping theres a few. How did they make it to the screen? Just on Blade Runner....the rights were sold not long ago and almost straight away, new merchandising was released and the sequel was announced, big change from the previous thirty years.

Addition.

It makes me laugh that you post a thread like this in a forum such as this and you immedeately have to take a defensive posture, can bleet all day about sneakers and sticks but the thought of another BB movie is either an utter outrage or waste of time. Cmon peeps, remember Colin Farell got paid a lot of money reprising Arnold Schwarzenegger JUST THIS YEAR PAST and your telling me how Hollywood works................Bring back the FUN.

Defensive posture? You're the one on the defensive. Lighten up dude. I was merely pointing out that there may not be that much interest in making a remake or a sequel to BB and that the rights issue could be a bit of a deterrent.

Seeing as Hollywood is recycling everything it can find I would be more surprised if there wasn't a remake at some point.

Oh and Robocop, Total Recall, and The Thing are all considered really good movies within the genre and more than minor cult classics.

I hate to say it.......Brad Pitt as Buckaroo. They would need a strong lead to drum up interest.

And use that land speed record car.....the black one with dual jets on it!

I think the "Oceans" cast minus Clooney for Depp, still think he`s got the vibe, is a great starting point for the whole thing.

i just watched the movie yesterday because of this thread. never heard of it before.

im quite disappointed

What didnt click for you EoS?

i dont know the movie just gave me nothing. it might have been due to the fact that i was terribly tired, but overall it was disconnected, and looked like more serious than it actually was.
it might also have been a bit of language barrier, alltho i only watch english movies, i might have missed some of the comedy due to the tiredness combined with it.
