I sent in my TA-1/PT and TA-1035 phones to Dennis McDonald (A1-telephone@usa.com) at A1 Telephone Service & Repair (address below) for conversion to working phones for my CIC Project (see link below).

Dennis is putting the updates via video on YouTube for all to see. Really cool. I'll post the updates.

Cool phone!

Instead of cutting in a hook switch, can't he just make the switch on the handset the hook switch (toggle on/off)? Meaning, you push the button once to answer and again to hang up? That would reduce the cosmetic modifications needed.

Just a thought.

Very very cool!

That would be a sweet conversion.. I was watching a handset from BSG on Ebay and was wondering if I could convert it, but it was just the handset not the system itself like this..

Any idea on what the cost of this is going to be? Judging by the amount of work he's implying in the video it looks a little expensive...

I was wondering myself (prior to seeing this) about picking one of these up and trying to gut a phone and install it into one. But, it's looking like it's quite a bit more involved than that. Looks like the speaker and mic would need to swapped and then there's the issue with the keypad... just for starters.

Honestly shouldn't be that bad, you can get desktop phones for about $5-$10 now and using those guts, simply rewire the new guts in the old phone... He explained that he swaps the mic and speaker for one better suited for the new electronics, that only leaves mapping the buttons to the new circuit, and most likely that is easy it's certainly not extraordinarily complicated... You could even convert it over to cellular pretty easily if you desired... You can get self contained cellular guts for about $100...

I have a TA-954 and a TA-1042.

I've been wanting to have one modified for home use for a while now.

Too cool - sounds like Dennis knows what he's doing and it's neat that he uses the same switches for the modified phone's functions.

I found this guy through a "rare" phone repair place in Roselle IL last year. Dennis is great he really loves what he does. He has said to me that he will take pretty much any military phone and convert it. He also hide a small red LED in view under the phone cord to see if the phone is off the hook.

Does anyone have access to one of the small metal pieces that need to be attached to the reviver in order to make it screen accurate?

Good to know Dennis is highly recommended. The videos are quite interesting - it's cool to see what's inside without actually having to take them apart myself.
