BSG original series jackets

Growing up, I don't think any article of clothing was cooler to me than those sweet looking brown Viper pilot jackets worn in the original Battlestar Galactica. They were like suede or something, and had those cool buckles and just looked neat. I know age past they actually sold licensed versions of those, but I'm assuming those are long gone and possible disentegrated. I did see a few at SDCC this year though, which leads me to think I might still find one somewhere.

Has anyone here done much original series costuming? Any good sources or advice on these jackets? I'm not even sure I care about getting the rest of the costume yet. I'll decide when I work out the jacket, I guess. :)

CJP is the authority on anything old school Galactica.

A few members here have originals that were also used on the show.

The licensed ones you mentioned were made of denim and came either in brown or a horrible green. :lol

Check E-bay as they show up from time to time

I just finished putting together the Warrior costume (sans helmet - still in the works)

It's all custom made from screen caps and hours spent with the seamstress.

We're actually working on a set for a customer at the moment and I'll post pics as soon as it's done if you want to see our version.
I'm sure there are a great deal of people on here that have sound information and sources for you if you're interested.
They are such classic outfits.

I had my Mom make this for me for the 20th anniversary Con in LA.
I also wore it for Richard Hatch's Promo Trailer shoot.

I've just acquired a complete costume and the jacket is a very well made (lined and with interior pockets) one even though it's a velourish material.

I suspect the real-deals were not made of suede but I agree that ones made with suede would look killer.

Pauleysolo: love the kneeboard.

I gathered a large amount of data on the jackets a few years back in hopes of running with a small costuming business after BSG.org had its issues. I was extremely lucky to be given access to screeen used heroes and background characters uni's and props along with information from CJP1 and others.
The originals were a suede cloth and extremely heavy/warm, the buckles were given an overspray of black paint to be "dulled" down for cameras. The "root beer" color is attributed to the dry cleaning weekly and bad lighting on the set, the original color was a dark brown with a very dark brown suede for the shoulders and the inside lined with a rayon/nylon. Some were lined some not, some had piping missing or placed in reverse (Sheba). A lot of the uniforms were reused for different actor and had little sttiches here and there sewn to make them fit better. Same thing with the tunic and pants, some lined some not, some with stirrups some not, some with 95% velcro closure on the flap and then a couple hooks, some with 100% velcro.
There are a couple folks here that got the only test uniforms we did, if they chime in they may be able to help with some more details.

I believe the original jackets were made from Ultrasuede (a very expensive fabric). ;)

I know "CP" makes accurate jacket buckles from time to time. I have yet to find a pattern offered for the jacket...or one that could be modified to replicate the jacket.

No, IIRC Ultra-Suede was not around back then.

Chris does sell the Buckles though. Go to, "The Colonial QuarterMaster" on his site to see if they are in stock.

Apollo is correct they were definitely not Ultra-Suede, that was a rumor started several years ago concerning the jackets and tunics/pants and then propagated by an article that was written. As I stated above the jackets were a suede cloth, the tunics/pants were another fabric entirely. The folks at ASAP have been asking for a pattern set for a while now, when the deal with the seamstress went South I was able to keep all the R/D stuff so I still have it, just not the sewing knowledge to put the patterns and info together.

I have an original jacket, tunic, trousers, gloves and boots from Galactica, also Kent McCords tunic and trousers from Galactica 80.

The original series tunic and trousers look to me to be made from the same material as the jacket, just a different color.

so, as of now, what would be the best way for a guyy to get a complete costume?

:) I'd love one. always loved them

Well, you have BSG.org, but they have had issues in the past. A few folks have ordered from them recently (past 6 months) and had no issues. But realize these are actually put together by Cathy and/or her shop from the defunct Kattara Kreations/JK2, and are not 100% accurate in design, materials or color but close. Or you can have a seamstress put together a uniform for you, which you would have to gather the research and oversee the project from start to finish, a lot of work but would probably turn out better due to eye for detail, etc. There was a guy from Canada putting together great looking uniforms but apparently has ripped some some folks off in the past year so that's out as an option.

Great costume.

But I want to tell you something.

Back in the day. I met with Jean Pierre Dorleac as at a convention. Talked with him about the uniform. Specifically the color of the belt.

They are supposed to be BLACK.

I see so many people useing the blue belts.

Apparently they dyed white ones to "black" but they never quite made it to black plus the bright stage light washed them out.

He said it always bugged him Blue on a brown uniform.

Thats strange, as most of the screen-used Gun-Belts that are now in private collections are blue.

Every Gun-belt I have seen, and that would be 4 are blue.

Apollo, you have no idea, she did awesome stuff but when it came time to commitment she flaked out. I'm just glad that I had only taken one order after the test uni's were done.

The blue vs. black vs. dk blue gunbelt deal has been an issue for a long time, as Apollo stated all the gunbelts that he has seen that are now in private collections are of the blue-grey color scheme, same goes for me. The only ones that differed would be the dk. blue used for the Security uniforms. Best way I've found to achieve the "right" color for the warrior belt would be to take one of the white cotton pistol belts, mix navy blue RIT with grey pearl RIT (7:3) and dye your white belt.
