Limited Run RUN IS ON Brisco County Jr. Colt SAA "Dragon" grips...

Ok, so I've been talking with Doug though PM about helping him with a set of replica Dragon grips from Brisco's Colt to match a real SAA Peacemaker and since that was a sucess, I am retooling the grips to fit an UMAREX SAA BB Gun/Replica.

The initial research thread is here:
Brisco County Jr Peacemaker Grips

Grips will be 3d printed in WHITE professional-grade resin on a high-end Formlabs machine. (Same one ILM and prop houses use.)

Cost is $250 per set shipped for 'unstained' resin prints (200 for every additional).

I was able to keep the "clip on" functionality of the original Umarex grips, so it can still accept CO2 cartridges and shoot. The opposite grip needs to be glued on and not fastened with a screw, but you never remove that anyway. (I know at least one screen gun had screws but the carvings look nicer without them.)

These are now ready to go! I will likely stop making them once I run out of white resin, as I don't usually use that color in my printer. I have just bought a new cartridge, but with some other stuff printing, I only have enough for a limited amount of grips.

Cheers!

One of the issues we've discovered while working on this is some variation in size of Colt SAA grips. There appear to be (at least) two "standard" sizes, and according to some internet "experts" these are carry overs from either the 1851 Colt or the 1860 Colt (The SAA is model 1873). I have a "Taylor & Company Gunfighter" (Gunfighter 5.5" .45Lc Checkered) which seems to be the same size as the one used on the TV show. That URL also shows a comparison of the two sizes, "Army" and "Navy" grips (and might have more information - I didn't dig).

Making matters worse, the (non-firing) replica - at least the Denix one I have - has an even smaller grip. So, making a "one size fit all" isn't really possible.

Yes, exactly this. Some of the basic work I did on the pattern can be carried over, but it's essentially going back to the start and re-shaping the grips, then applying the pattern to the new shape.

Outside of the US, I reckon fewer people own real pistols, but the Denix, the airsofts and BB guns are readily available and legal in a lot more places, which is why I thought it might be an idea to do one of those. It stands to reason the Denix might be the most common, but out of all the replicas it has the 'cheapest' look, with the rough surface finish and pot metal. (I had in the early 00s but converted it to Hellboy's Samaritan for a quick'n'dirty Halloween costume, then I sold it.)

Well, I’ll be putting it on a clone, either uberti or Pieta. Taylor buys from them.

Correct, they are not made by Colt. But from what I'm reading there are two sizes of grips, so hopefully enough standardization there to avoid having to start from scratch for each pistol. The ones Joe made for me are for my "Army" grip Taylor/Uberti model and would probably fit another Colt SSA clone with Army grips, with possibly some minor adjustment.

We now have confirmation that the current pattern will fit an Uberti SAA with "army" grips! If anyone wants to check if these will fit their gun, print this page in 1:1 and cut out the silhouette. If anyone has a replica or BB gun, by all means check if they will fit those!

I can print these up now, at any time, so if you want a set, send me a PM!

(Fitting for any other gun, BB/airsoft/replica, would need reworking and not viable for just one copy because it would get expensive. I might be rewatching the show soon and IF I get inspired I might do a replica for myself.)

I don't have a gun yet. Since this is for display, I don't want to use a real fire arm and I'm looking at either getting a Denix or the Umarex. If there any lurkers here with either replica firearm, can you compare the profile provided by JOATRASH and see how closely it aligns?

I also have some questions about Brisco's gun as I'm not well-versed on revolvers. feel like the color in the show leans towards the dark blue and not completely uniform in color. When browsing the options, I feel like the black options don't feel quite right. Is black correct, or is there something I am missing?

Also, what length barrel is most accurate? I feel like the 7.5 inch barrel looks the most correct, but I wanted the opinion of more knowledgeable folk.

As soon as I get some answers, I'll probably be ordering a pair of grips. They are beautiful.

Brisco's gun was a Colt SAA with 5.5" barrel and "Navy" grips. I also wondered a lot about the color. Some shots show the frame as "parkerized" (non-uniform coloring), while the rest is gun-blue (more black). But, it does look very blue in some shots and I wonder if that is reflections of blue sky and/or blue gels (lights). There is a different "bluing" process that is more blue, but I can't determine that Brisco's was actually a lighter blue (some shots look more like standard gun-blue).

I would assume that the current printable model will not fit a Denix or Umarex. I kind of want one of these now too, just because they did turn out pretty nice on Doug's gun, so if we can get at least a few people onboard, then maybe I can justify getting a Umarex and redo the model for that. (My current financial situation doesn't really have room for it otherwise.) Alternately if someone already has an Umarex and can scan the grip on a regular home printer, I can work from that silhouette and we'd need fewer oboard. One note, however... since the Umarex grips are hollow to allow room for the CO2 cartridge, they do require a fair bit of work. I'm also not entirely sure how to easily incorporate the "snap in place mechanism. It might be difficult to get it right without a lot of test prints and that means it will cost a bit to do. (And they will be more delicate than the ABS-plastic grips of the original Umarex.) From what I remember, Denix doesn't make a blued Peacemaker, but they DO make one in a flat black.

Hmm, yeah... this is just a photo but the Umarex needs reshaping in addition to hollowing it out. (White is the Uberti shape.)

Umarex doesn't make one blued either, only what they call "antique" which looks like some kind of gunmetal with slight blue tones.

And as mentioned, Denix makes one in black, but the barrel is too short at only 4.75.

So would this model from Denix be the one to get? (Revólver Cal.45 Peacemaker 5½", USA 1873 Black)

Could part of my payment be purchasing one of these for you so you can do the fit-up and keep one for yourself?
The Denix is not accurate... the barrel is too short on that one by somthing like 3/4 an inch and it's pretty noticeable. (And thanks for the offer, but I can get the Denix fairly cheap locally.) It's just a fair bit of work modding the grips either way and having owned a Denix a few years ago, I'm not really sure they're worth the effort, to be honest. The castings are soft, the loading cover tends to become loose the jiggly so that it doesn't stay in place.... add that the finish isn't very nice either. I think the best option is to see if enough folks feel like getting an Umarex. I know the finish on those is great and the trigger mechanism smooth and 'clicky'.

I actually just found a local source that still has the blued version in stock, so I'm bumping this. If we can get three people that wants the grips for an Umarex, then I'll attempt the conversion, if only because they looked so nice on Doug's Ubert!. Note, however that I can't absolutely guarantee that the printed grips will be as easily removed as the ones on the factory made version. Printed resin is a lot different than ABS. Plus the way the "spring" is set up in the Umarex, it might take many costly test-prints to get them to fit. (Ironic that making grips for a bb gun should be potentially more difficult than for a real gun!)

First PLA-test print of the Umarex version.

I have also changed the status of this to a limited run.

For those looking for an Umarex, I suggest the ANTIQUE version will get you closest to the screen pistol.
