Bondo and large gaps. Help please?

Okay. I have a project I'm trying to fix up that I'd rather not reveal at this time. I need to securely attach two pieces together. There is a large gap around the main object that the side pieces need to connect to. I'd like to fill these gaps in with Bondo and also smooth out some of the surface areas. Is there a certain type of glue or wire or something I can use combined with Bondo to make everything stronger, more stable and also fill the gaps in with as well without worrying about it all cracking apart?

I've never used Bondo before either... but have a can of it i've been wanting to use for sometime now. I'm just nervous about it.

Also can bondo be used over sheet styrene? I want to use it to make one solid surface over top of a styrene surface that is made up of multiple parts.

I know from experience that bondo will not stay adhered to styrene. You would need to drill holes in it plastic to help it hold but it will separate from the surface. It does how ever hold real well to acrylic surfaces.

What if I covered the styrene with something like aluminum tape? Hm. The tape could always possibly come off though I guess..

There are other options out there you could look at besides regular bondo. Make friends with someone in an autobody shop, they have many types of bondo-type materials they use depending on the application and surface.

PM me with your problem in a little greater detail than your complete vagueness and I'll see what I can do to help. I have a fair amount of auto body experience.

Is there a possibility to use "JB Weld"? It bonds to many more materials than bondo. Downfall might be it is not as easy to work with or spread.

Bondo can also be mixed with fibre to 'pad' ot large gaps. We have it here in the UK. It almost looks like bondo mixed with fibreglass strand.

Very effective. :thumbsup

Sand the surface of the styrene with like 100 to 150 grit sand paper and the Bondo will stick to it, but on smooth styrene it will come right off after it hardens. You can mix fiberglass chop strand in with the Bondo to make it stronger and bridge gaps easier.

Use BONDO Hair. Its the same price and has fiberglass embedded in it. Works awesome and is VERY strong. You can get it at wal-Mart.

Also follow the above advice and sand the surface well before applying the Bondo.
