Hey mate, looking good so far, and welcome to the club!
I'm personally building the McQuarrie Vader here: http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=246627&highlight=mcquarrie

Quick question though are you planning to do the whole costume? If so would you want to try 501st Approval since thats what I'm going too do.

Oh and by the way, if you haven't already please also post your stuff over on the "Ralph McQuarrie Concept Crew" where we are speifically focused on the building of costumes based on the amazing art of Ralph McQuarrie! You'll find some very useful resources and there's also another gentleman building a McQuarrie Fett and is working on the Jet Pack! ;)

It'd be great if you could come post on the RMQ Concept Crew Forum as well! :)

Also, just subscribed to your thread here ;)

Awesome! Thanks for the info. Heard of the 501st but never really looked into it but I definitely need to look into that. Your Vader is on point! That helmet is a complicated sculpt, I don't think I could pull that off just yet. Well done.

And I had no idea that there was a dedicated McQuarrie forum so just signed up over there as well. Thanks again for the tips!

Hey! i was on the dented helmet posting the same thread!, its hard trying to find the right materials for the McQuarrie Boba, so far all ive seen is just the helm and few armor pieces done,, i look forward to doing this variation as a side project too!star-wars-ralph-mcquarrie-boba-fett-statue-200372-02.jpg

No problems and thank you mate :)
Although I wish I could say I sculpted it, I actually got it from another member here in a pretty poor state and have spent ages doing back up again and fitting it out for use, so that kind of counts

Just don't forget to post in the registration thread to get approved to access the forum and if you guys have problems getting approved I'll shoot a PM to the webmaster to help out ;)

Thanks man!! i really appreciate it!, signed up for the RMQ concept crew cant wait to get more info from the forum members there!

Hey! So after a few months of figuring out the logistics of this, I'm finally in the design stage. I wanted to build a complete 3D prototype before starting the build, that way I can determine which pieces I can handle and which will need to be outsourced. First a bit of background:

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
I'm sort of getting in over my head on this one (intentionally) so i'm likely going to need a lot of your expertise and guidance. This is a piece based on concept art, so I'm going to be taking some liberties with the details. As far as the construction, I want to get into a realistic level of detail in both appearance as well as materials and manufacturing. So not a replica of what may have been used on-set or a typical 'prop' piece, but something that looks, feels and operates like something pulled directly out of the universe it was designed for. Like those insane graflex lightsaber replicas that go way beyond what was ever used for the film. We're gonna need a lot of different materials and processes. Fortunately I don't have to worry about tracking down original parts since this was never manufactured for the film.

CAD
I've had a bit of experience with several 3D modeling programs but I am completely new to CAD so I researched programs for a while. I finally landed on 'OnShape'. It's awesome. Completely browser & cloud-based, so no downloads. installs, or saves required. You can access your files with their iOS/Android app to view on any device. And most importantly, it it built for sharing and collaborating. Think of Google Docs, but for CAD. Best of all it's free if you register as a hobbyist. I'll be a sales rep for them in no time. Anyways, enough on them. It's a steep learning curve so it will take some time for me to get a handle on it but the design is underway.

SOMETHING INTERESTING
Lastly, look at this. Maybe this has already talked about but I hadn't seen anything. In the particular concept I am referencing, after boosting the contrast of the source image I noticed some details of the helmet I had never noticed before. One is that there appears to be some artifacts around the mouth portion of the mask suggesting that this design did not incorporate (possibly) a full vizor.

Additionally, the vizor in the side view appears to be at a very different angle than the front of the mask, so it looks like the outer helmet is really a shell sitting on top of an inner-helmet or mask piece. The visor is recessed quite a ways from the front plate. Also that chin piece sitting below the helmet...

That got me sort of excited. Ok, more updates on the way. Thanks for checking in!

This week has been a LOT of trial and error in CAD design. I ended up scrapping the original CAD file because a lot of my initial setup was causing problems once I got into the finer details of alignment and proportions. I still have a long ways to go but getting the hang of it.

I'm on a much better track now. I revised the reference imagery, even pulled in some of Wizardofflight's specs to get the top of the dome looking more natural. As soon as I've got the main shell pieces finished I need to get these prototyped and fitted before designing any of the interior.
