Best glue and paint to use on ABS?

I am a little stumped. I have a friend I am trying to help with a project, and it involves ABS (which I have had virtually nil experience with) and some foamies possibly.

I know that ABS tends to turn to goo if you use enamel based spray paints, but are there any paints you can use besides acrylic hand paints?

Also, what is the best non deforming glue to use with this stuff?

Many thanks in advance
Chris

Ivedone a couple ABS trek padds before, I used a basic 2 part epoxy, sanded the areas where I put the glue for a strong hold and airbrushed a undercoat of basic krypon primer then used duplicoat automotive over that, had no problems with build, hope that kinda helps

I have had good luck with CA Glues when working with ABS. I like to use the Zap-A-Gap brand (green bottle) with the Zip Kicker Accelerator Spray. Most hobby stores have it.

If your working with larger stuff I have used Krylon brand spray paints cans on .060 and thicker ABS and it works great.

Is there something wrong with ABS glue or styrene glue for gluing ABS to ABS? It bonds the plastic together. CA glue can be brittle, and is not suitable for where the parts flex. I have been recommended to use E6000 on ABS, but I don't know much about it.

Styrene glue is NOT suitable for gluing polystyrene foam, though. It will eat it!

Sorry that is true... CA glue will not flex.

If you need it to be flexible you can also use IPS Weld-On ABS #2771 Milky Medium if your ABS is white. Or #2771 in black. The Black can also be found at Home Depot, but not the milky clear. Keep in mind that if too much is applied it can warp the ABS.

Cool :D

We are still pretty much in the doodle stage, but I have a good idea of what he wants done, and what I can do. Just gotta grab some new xacto blades and some kind of glue.

I think he wants the piece to be pretty rigid, and the ABS I have is pretty thin. It isn't a complex piece, and I have a sheet (4x8 I think) of the plastic, so we can get multiple "tries" out of it.

I will give the glue a shot first. If it doesn't work I will swing by Lowes and grab some of that ABS solvent stuff.

Thanks for the tips guys!

The best IMO 'glue' for ABS is Devcon Plastic Welder, it can be found at Wal-Mart and many hardware stores, it's a two part epoxy that is flexible but also has chemicals in it that etch into the surface of many plastics... There is also another knock version sold at Menards can't recall the name off hand but the name is pretty obvious something like 'plastic epoxy'

Note on the above you only get a few minutes (literally) once mixed so mix small batches...

Other then that you need to use a solvent based glue like the Weldon versions suggested above, most plumbing supply places will carry this as ABS pipe is often used as an alternative to PVC...

Or you can look in the model section for more solvent based ABS glues, one off the top of my head is Proweld, but it will not fill voids it's for tight seams as it's like water...

Weld-on #3

PRIMER THE SURFACE BEFORE PAINTING!!!!!!

I've had no problems with cheap OSH paint but usually use automotive primer like Plasticoat or Duplicolor.

Give it a few coats and let it sit a few days.
Once cured you can use almost anything on it for paint.
Cheap OSH rattle can, automotive paints, model paint, ink. leather dye, what ever.
