Berserk Guts Sword WIP

Been a fan of Berserk for some time and after watching the newish movies decided I wanted to build his sword. This is the one he uses during the Golden Age Arc when he's with the Band of the Hawk. The one he breaks while fighting General Boscogn in the final battle of the war. Not the absurdly large "Dragon Slayer" sword he uses later.

I'm going to use a combination of solid wood, plywood, PVC, and some metal hardware on this build. I'm not sure if I want to use plywood for the blade because I'll be routing out the fuller in the center which will expose the core, but it might be the only wood long and straight enough to work. I've worked out the dimensions I'm going to use after building a quick cardboard mockup. I also mocked up the pommel, grip, crossguard, and start of blade to get a sense for how things will come together.

And a mockup of the blade and crossguard. I may make the tip of the final version a little wider, but I like the overall dimensions I got. Blade is 51" long.

Got the pieces for the crossguard, grip, and pommel ready. I'm going to use Chicago screws for the bolts. The idea for the hilt is to use a threaded rod and coupling bolts imbedded in the pieces to secure things together. The rod will also be set into the blade. Hopefully this setup will work - but we'll see.

Actually starting to come together a bit now.

Got the hilt section built out. Still need to chisel out the mortise section that the blade will fit into on the crossguard. Then everything needs sanding and painting.

And here's the blade. I routed out the fuller and used my table saw to cut the angle in the sides. I had to make a special zero-clearance jig to be able to make safe cuts like that but once I figured out what I need to do it went very well.

Thanks, I always like seeing other peoples build process.

Here it is all assembled. That's my Jorah Mormont sword which is about typical size for a broadsword, next to it to get an idea of how big this thing.

This is looking really awesome! I am excited to see how the final finishing turns out. I am impressed with how you cut the blade features, looks great. Have a look at my build thread for my Edge of Tomorrow Heli-Blade build. It might give you some ideas or alternative ways of finishing things off. Not that you'll need them but who knows! :)

Thanks, your build looks really nice, very different approach too.

Here's the finished product. I started with a base of black and then did the blade in chromed aluminum and the hilt in nickel, both sprayed. Then weathered and highlighted with some black acrylic. Pretty simple overall. And the grip is some canvas I cut into strips. May want to come back and redo that if I find a better material.
