Monsters in Motion has just sent out this announcement of interest to fans of BSG: TOS:

Monsters In Motion is proud to announce that we will be carrying an entire line of
OFFICIAL Battlestar Galactica Original Series Props, Costumes, and accessories.
This line includes:

- Colonial Warrior's Sidearm Blaster Prop Replica
(with available Holster / Belt)

- Colonial Warrior Jacket

- Colonial Warrior Uniform

- Colonial Bridge Officer Uniform

- Galactica Collar Pins

- Galactica Unit Patch: Blue Squadron

- Commander Cain Chest Badge

These authentic replica pieces are a MUST for the serious original series fan.

Check out the details here:

Monsters in Motion: Battlestar Galactica Original Series Replicas

I'll be interested to hear from the BSG: TOS experts how well this new line measures up to the screen-used stuff, and to the other replicas already out there.

{EDIT} I just had a look at some of the sublinks to the products above. Looks as if many of these items aren't new; rather, MiM will begin stocking a line of items that have previously been offered through other outlets.

Hate to say it but I am not holding my breath on the quality of any of the items.

I mean, it's MIM ya know? :unsure

Hey now, some of their stuff is pretty good. Cast off screen used pieces, or so I...ah...hear...

:lol

I don't know that MIM actually makes much of their own stuff. I think they'e mostly resellers. We probably have some board members that sell through them...

Exactly my point. :lol

The only worth-while items probably are made by board members.

All that link looks like is an ad for Battlestar Galactica.Org. :rolleyes

I knew I'd recognized those costume photos. Now we know where they decided to dump their inventory when their site was taken down.

Their site is still up.

Go ahead you know you want to order. :p

we already make our own.

...and very nicely done I might add. :)

Glad they're up and running again, but no thanks, we already make our own.

;)

Boy, do you ever. (Insert "X-Mas Hint" emoticon here)

Emoticon? Is that one of the lesser-known Transformer robots?

The Cain badge is flat wrong. The rest of it looks pretty good.

Glad somebody else said it and not me. :)

Shouldn't the bridge uniform be a bit darker, or is it just the photo?
[/b]

Probably just the front-lighting.

The only thing I'm missing is the dress cape, which NATURALLY they aren't offering.

And before I get the inflow of "prove that last statement, ya arrogant chode" from a couple of posts back, I will elaborate.

The badge they have at MiM is a modified large-size US "Navy Command Ashore" badge with the two outer blades of the trident cut off:

Now, smaller versions of this badge ARE used as the collar pins for the Pegasus uniforms (as you can see in the screen capture below), but the Cain badge is NOT the bigger one. It is simply too wide and bulky. The real pin (shown below) is far narrower and has a dagger in the middle which tapers out gently as you make your way to the top of the badge, rather than the central portion of the trident which is almost perfectly straight. I can understand why some would think this was it from earlier grainy footage and at a distance, but it is not the case. The high-quality transfer of the TOS DVD's have shed a great deal of light on the costuming choices that were used back then.

It took me several years to discover the badge's true origin. It is, in fact, a modified World War II Italian "Assault-Combat" Badge:

My theory is this: They found this thing laying around in a dusty bargain bin at some military surplus store. It had the crown at the top which they could take off, but it had the same sword/wing motif as the patch they chose for the Pegasus (which, in reality, was a Korean-War era SCARWAF - Special Category Army With Air Force - combat engineers unit) shown below:

I suspect that, during initial filming, it was difficult to see the pin detailing with the wings inside the pin - reflecting the studio lights too much or something - and the wings were eventually removed to match the final product. I show the progression here:

As far as I know, there is nothing closer to the real Cain badge than this and people should really stop trying to pawn off the other thing as a canonical costume piece, which it most certainly is not.

Oh, and if anyone is wondering what the cravat piece is under Cain's chin:

cain14qg.jpg

...it is a combination between a US Air Force Combat Readiness Medal (on top) and a US European Command Headquarters Badge (underneath):

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Resin castings of both of these costume devices are available from Gordon Smuder (a.k.a. "SpcGlider") at Dewback Wing ASAP in the BSG "Original Series Props" and "Original Series Costumes" sections.

See ya.

Well, you certainly proved that last statement, and a lot more. :)

Thanks for the beautiful photo analysis and text, Gebirg. You taught me a lot. :thumbsup

It's nice to see the original series items being manufactured again. I'll have to wait to see the quality of the items before purchasing anything. Also, new detailed photos of the actual items would be nice to see posted on the Monsters In Motion website. I'm still waiting for a decent 1:1 daggit.

Same here.

I wonder if Ronculus would tackle the job?
