Basic sculpting advice please

ok ive never sculpted i dont know anything about it. but i have a few things on my mind that i want to make ones the predator bio helm. I want to know what type of clay to use ... air dry, oil based, whatever. And any other really basic information like that. thanks in advance
 
Depends on if you want the finished sculpture to be the final painted copy or if you want to mold it and cast it in resin.
With oil based non hardening clays you can work on it forever and get nice sharp details but you will have to make a mold and cast it.
You could also carve the mask out of foam and sculpt over it with epoxy putty or even bondo and you should be able to paint it and its done.
 
Carve it out of foam and use that as your armature. Then sculpt over the foam using two part epoxy clay like aves. You can sculpt it then sand and carve it. When you're done you can carve out the foam from behind the mask. You can prime and paint it with no problem as well.
