Interest Back to the Future III - Walkie Talkie + Battery

Small update to this project.

I'm in the process of getting a resin 3D printer and will use it to attempt to make the walkie talkie parts. I have no 3D modeling skills, so I will be paying someone else to make a high-quality model of the parts, based on the accurate measurements and reference photos of my original parts.

I think it will turn out a lot cleaner and better quality than I am able to do with a mold and casting of the original. Resin prints don't usually have the heavy layer lines or require much sanding, if any. I am going to have custom clear and white printed decals made for the white lettering. I'll also get copies of the metallic silver sticker made for the back.

It is still going to have the metal retractable antenna and metal/wood/wire parts for the battery. I should also be able to make better and more accurate caps for the battery. I don't have a set date for when I will have them completed, but it should be less than 6 months from now if everything works out as planned.

Hi Dan,

You can get my buddy Boon to 3d model the parts for you, you can PM him here or e-mail him at: skyludesign.sb@gmail.com , his modeling skills is second to none (y)

Any updates on this?

The Burgess batteries will be available first. Those should be ready sometime in April, if everything goes as planned.

The wood and metal parts for the batteries will be ordered and cut in the next few weeks. The battery caps will be 3D printed resin.

I am ordering some custom vinyl stickers for the Burgess battery labels. Unlike the paper stickers used on the original props, my labels will be excellent quality, durable, and weatherproof. The stickers will be the exact same quality and type of vinyl as the OUTATIME license plate registration stickers that I sell.

The replica Archer Space Patrol walkie talkies will take longer to complete than the batteries, due to all the extra work that is required. I am not sure how long that will take at the moment. This week I picked up an extra set of original walkie talkies for reference, since my only other one is disassembled and in rough condition.

I expect to receive the custom Archer Space Patrol stickers for the walkie talkies on Thursday or Friday. There are matte clear vinyl stickers with white printing for the front logo, and matte silver stickers with black printing for the back. I will post some photos as soon as they arrive. The Burgess battery labels should be here in about 10 days.

I have received the stickers. I made a few slight alterations to the very small text on the back of the silver stickers, such as changing China to U.S.A., so that the replicas will be accurately labeled for customs forms when they are shipped outside of the U.S. None of this is ever legible at all on screen, and is barely visible on the actual label. In the photos, I just stuck them over the molded plastic lettering, so they do not lie perfectly flat.

The white/clear 'Archer Space Patrol' logo stickers for the front also turned out well. They are somewhat difficult to photograph, but will look good on the replicas when they are finished.

The estimated delivery date for the Burgess battery labels is next Thursday, February 25.

The vinyl Burgess battery labels were delivered today. These are made with the same kind of weatherproof fade resistant vinyl as my OUTATIME license plate registration stickers. They have a really good adhesive backing, and will stay in place permanently, so you won't have any problems with them peeling or falling off. I also received some more metal tubing for the outer battery parts, and a roll of cloth covered wire.

Test of the label placement on the metal tubing. Takes a while to align correctly, but no problems so far.

I have found someone in my area who can do the custom metal and wood work.
He should be able to get all of the parts lathed and cut down to their proper sizes.

UPDATE: I was able to identify and screen match the correct type of black caps that go on the battery terminals.
I have some originals on the way, and I will get a 3D model of these parts made so that resin copies can be printed.

Would anyone be interested in a replica battery that is only made of wood? The overall size/diameter would be the same, because the wood core would not be cut down to fit inside the metal tube. The silver outer rim on the top and bottom would be painted on. I have one extra 3 ft. piece of wood to work with, and was thinking of making 5-6 of these available as a slightly cheaper alternative to the screen accurate version.

I have updated the first post with the current price estimates and all of the various battery/walkie-talkie combinations that will be available.

EDIT: I was able to get 1 wood battery piece cut from my material. I did a test assembly with my walkie talkie, and it looks like the size of the battery and label are screen accurate. No photos of this one. It is a very rough mock-up, with incorrect tape and paint colors, and made just to check the scale of everything. But the final version will look good.

The gaffer tape and battery terminal caps were finally delivered, so I have updated the mock-up. It's still not 100% perfect, because the battery is just a piece of wood with a crudely painted silver rim. There are also a few other details that need to be altered. The wire is not the right gauge, so I have ordered some more that is the correct smaller size.

I expect to receive the finished wood and metal parts for the screen-accurate battery replicas in about 1 week.
