Atlantean Sword Grip

got myself a low cost atlantean sword, pretty accurate apart from the covering on the grip, which is wide leather instead of the cord.

any ideas what would be suitable as a replacement, and also how to get it the correct colour would be most appreciated.

its too wide even for the destroyer, but i also noted in some scenes in the destroyer they used the cotton grip as well, thats the look i want to go for. its just trying to find a good copy is hard

i used a beige type of cotton string/yarn for my atlantean waster years back. unfortunately the thing broke so ive lost it. but everyone said it looked very close :)

well, i ended up using plain ol' white string died in coffee, its a little light and i will get round to doing it again, simply fixed it to the handle with double sided tape.

Been looking for an affordable Atlantean myself. Where did you find yours?

There are a couple inexpensive ones on the Bay. One for about $50 and one for $115. This looks to be the latter. It has the blade etching, whereas the cheaper version does not.

I've been window shopping these for far too long!

Just Got One!!
THANKS for the heads-up.

Very nice for the price. $115.00 with Shipping, sweet.

I will be doing some cord wrapping myself soon. :)

Got mine.
Not bad for the price.

Plastic handle has to go though.

I will making a new one out of wood and then use cord-wrapping.

I like the coffee staining idea. Thx.

yeah i wanted to replace the handle with wood just to make it a little sturdier, also want to do some sort of decoration on the plaque as plain black is a little bland

Yep.
Saw that, of course AFTER I re-made mine with wood and cotton cord. :angry

Good display piece for the price. I recomend it for the Conan fan on a budget.

What all was involved with replacing the grip? Does the pommel just unscrew or something?

Thanks!

The faux leather on mine practically fell off by itself. :rolleyes :lol

It's just glued to one end, wrapped around the hilt, and tied off (kinda tucked into itself) at the other end.

I re-wrapped mine with cord using the existing glue that was still on there (it was still tacky) and superglued the other end of the cord down.

Oops- realized your talking about replacing the hilt itself, not just the leather.

Yes, the pommel unscrews, its NOT a full-tang sword BTW. I wasnt expecting it to be for that price.
I replaced the plastic handle with wood just for my own taste, not entirely neccessary for a display piece.

I used round wood dowel stock and had to turn it down a bit on the lathe and then notch both ends to fit inside the hollow guard and pommel parts.
Drilling a hole for the threaded tang/bar was the hardest part.

I would just consider keeping the plastic handle.

Incredibly good for the price! I might even pick one up if they're still available when I have a spare "Benjamin"! :):thumbsup

BUT... and I know I'm in the minority here... I actually PREFER the leather-wrapped grip on the Conan the Destroyer version. If money was absolutely no object, I would have bought Albion's Conan the Destroyer Atlantean Sword with the matching leather scabbard. The problem is that the sword alone was $3,000, and the scabbard was another $1,000, making it a prop replica ONLY for the very wealthy collector! :(:thumbsdown

So, my only options are this one or maybe the Marto. Too bad neither of them comes with a scabbard, As Far As I Know. :unsure
