Art Asylum TOS Communicator

Just placed my pre-order for this, due out in Feb 08 -- which means we'll likely not see it until March or April :)

Speculation is they are basing it on STTE comm molds which were taken from MR molds (again, speculation)

Be interesting to see how it actually looks.

If anyone has any more info, please share.

I have been very satisfied with the other Art Asylum stuff I have bought. I am sure I will like the com, but I would rather see them do a tricorder.

I have to order a few of these to go with the phasers.
Here is the pre-release photo, looks just like the STTE. I wounder if it looks like this or if the pic is just a place holder? It only mentions sound, I wonder if this means no spinning moire or lights?

That is the first run STTE. The DST Comm will be off the same molds as the STTE's, DST is basically picking up the line from STTE due to their decision not to carry them anymore after their current stock is depleted, however no spinning moire on DST's Version, and will come in 2 Models, both will have the familiar chirp when opened, also it will have these voices played at random:

# Enterprise, This is Kirk.
# Spock here Captain.
# Bridge here captain.
# Transporter room ready to beam up.
# Bridge, this is the captain
# Enterprise to Mr Spock.
# Captain, Shall I beam down an armed party?
# Scotty here, captain

There will also be an "Enhanced Release" available with one additional voice in addition to the others:

"Your signal is very weak; can you turn up your gain." (Mr. Spock)

I would be happy with a simple Chirp if they can do a better job with it than the STTE Version.

From AA? That would be fantastic, but I don't see it happening. AA makes stuff that is affordable and basically marketed as toys. They could make them less expensive by not using a bunch of individual LEDs, but even then Viacom/ Paramount/ CBS likes to rake people over the coals with pricing and licensing costs :angry Hate Viacom!

mine sounds pretty nice, it has the spinnig metal disk, the 2 lights, and makes the right chirp when opened up, and has the hailing hidden button on backside making the boop boop noise.

one button you hit on front makes the radio frequency surfing static noise the other button makes the center red light flash.

Will it still have the lights or just sound?

The prototype has the "chirp" once you flip open the lid, followed by the voice which rotates randomly and all 3 of the lights flash together. But Who knows what the final Production Model will look or act like that comes back from China, I think we all know how that works. ;)

So far it appears that several outlets will carry them for $25.99. It also appears that http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=DC17711 will be the only outlet so far carrying the exclusive with the additional sound bite of Spock. The "Exclusive" appears to be 4 bucks more at $29.99.

Other outlets carrying these for pre-order seem to be:

Newforcecomics.com
Forbiddenplanet.com
AFX.com
DST.com

Of course I'll be grabbing a few of these. Does anyone know if the flip grid will be metal or plastic on the new one?

The one on the prototype is brass....These are going to be made by the same company that was making them for STTE in China using the same molds and most of the same materials, the electronics will change of course, doing away with the spinning moire, and I am sure most of the metal parts will be made from plastic before it is all said and done and these go into production.

All in all, for 25 bucks, who can complain? . :)

I'd be fine with the replacing the metal with plastic, but I think that it should include the spinning moire

Well a source at DST stated today that the production model of the communicator will in fact have the motorized moire in addition to all the other features mentioned. The sweat shops in China will be going strong....

Looking more and more like a great deal for 25 bucks.....
