I was originally working on a chain mail vest for a Chrono Cross costume, but as I was buying the rings on TheRingLord.com I saw they had many colorful scales. I had an idea to use green scales to make the little green scaly shorts that Classic Robin wears, but then I started reading the New 52 Aquaman. I was enthralled by it, and in issue #2 when he mentioned that his orange shirt was scale armor I knew I had to make my own.
So, I ordered lots of orange scales and rings from the site and started working on it in late November last year. I managed to finish it just in time last week for Megacon. I lost count of how many scales and rings I used, but it ended up being well over 2000 of each. This came out to be a few hundred dollars, plus the high cost of shipping from Canada.
I used the 4 rings per scale pattern using trial and error to make sure I placed the contractions correctly and have it fit my body as good as possible. The sleeves caused me a lot of problems. I couldn't find any help on how to make scale mail sleeves so I had to experiment. The arms turned out alright, but the shoulders and armpits are messy. I'll have to go back and use a different pattern.
The rest of the costume was basic. I bought the belt from 4th Wall Design. I ordered the gloves from LeatherMystics.com. I bought white dancer's tights, and after 2 botched dye-jobs it turned out a lighter green than it should've been. So, I was unfortunately not able to attach the resin fins I made. Another thing I have to go back and remake.
Anyway, here's some pictures of me in the costume at Megacon. If you have any questions, let me know.
