That's an unused John Eaves design from "First Contact" I think. I don't think it was ever built as a physical piece, but there's a couple good sketches of it in one of the big coffee table size Trek books that were done back in the 90s. I can't remember the exact title, but I have it and will try to remember to look it up tonight when I get home. I can't remember if it had a drawing showing it w/ the antenna open or not.

Yep, that was the Art of Star Trek - the antenna was unopened and the backstory was:
John Eaves had to draw new comm(badges) for STVII, and since TOS, he hadn't seen the badges and the further development. So he drew some concepts including this, went to Herman Zimmerman (with other people in the room), presented these and... Herman was shaking his head, while other were laughing, and Herman asked him: "What is THIS?." "These are the comms concept you requested," answered John, a little bit taken aback, and others were going hysterical. "John, things had changed since you saw TOS..." said Herman and gave him a couple of tapes, where he could see, how a combadge looked like. He slunked back to his drawing board and made several concepts, which included the VOY combagde we saw on TV.

I made that image years ago and have posted it here a couple of times. There was no inside with the source material, but I did have one in mind when I ceated the 3D version. I just never got around to making the inside.

That comm looks pretty cool. I would love to see the inside done.

You would have thought that if they had had hand held comms by the 24th century... that they would have made it where they had a screen on it for visual communication.
