Anyone see "The Illusionist"?

...There's a very cool prop in "The Illusionist", it's the key prop for the whole movie. A wood locket that has a unique way of opening. I'd love to have one of these for my wife...anyone know what I'm talking about?

And, BTW, didn't Edward Norton remind you of Dr. Strange?

I thought the same thing as soon as I saw the locket. During the movie I was thining about how to make one. After thinking about the mechanics of it for a while, I had to conclude that there were probably 2 different lockets, one that twisted, then one that opened up. Because for it to twist into a heart, both sides would have to pivot on a single axis. That would mean that they are separate pieces. To then slide the locket open, the pieces would have to hinge at a third point. The pieces would fall apart. Plus, there'd be no way to keep a picture in it. Twisting it would tear the picture in half. I'm about 90% sure that they never showed the locket open up in both stages in one uninterrupted shot. They always intercut between the twisting and the opening in which they swapped out the different lockets. I'm pretty sure it was designed as a seemingly impossible occurance to fit with the mood of the film and the other bizzare things he did.
Good flick though.

I thought that too, actually. I think you could keep the picture in one side of the heart and then do it, but I have no idea how you'd make the sliding door.

I agree with Trooper Trent. Saw the movie. Loved the locket. I paid attention to the Close Up shot where they show the locket open. There's a CUT between shots. They DID use two different lockets.

Still, it'd be nice to have one for the wife. Magic or not...

Why do I think every wife of a guy on this board is having the same reaction?
As soon as the locket was shown my wife turns to me and says, "I want one. Can you make it?" :confused

It's not a spoiler. But even if it was, I'd think reading "...There's a very cool prop in "The Illusionist", it's the key prop for the whole movie. " would have given you a warning to stop reading if you didn't want to know.

Geez. How about a spoiler alert.

I bet you yelled out Vader is Luke's father.

Doesn't sound like a spoiler to me. Even knowing that it's an important part of the film, it doesn't give away any plot points or story elements. It's never mentioned how, why or by whom it's used. Nor is it mentioned as to why it's important.

Try to think of it as a "heads up". Something to keep an eye out for.

People here are becoming waaay too sensitive about what they're willing to consider a spoiler.

Plot summary and story/character elements - spoiler
props in movies without any movie context given - not spoiler

Here are some spoilers for the overly sensitve:

In the two new movies coming out, The Protector and Fearless, there's going to be some kung-fu fighting.

Gee, I hope I didn't ruin those movies for anyone :unsure :rolleyes

Exactly.

And it's not a spoiler to say a movie has a prop in it. Dirty Harry carries a big gun and Captain Kirk uses a phaser. Are those spoilers?

Oh yeah, and in "Hollywoodland" Reeves may or may not have killed himself.

There, saved you the $10 ticket.

I want to see this movie, I love Giamatti.

No, in order for it to be a spoiler, you have to tell people that was a superman costume in it - see how it works?

It's only a spoiler if you mention a prop without any proper context ;) :lol :lol
