Anubis limestone carving wip

This is a piece I've been meaning to finish for quite awhile, so now I'm going to start working on it a few hours a day. Right now I'm still roughing out the shape, but I'll post my progress as I go. I'm using regular hand chisels, no pneumatic powered one's on this piece since it's more for relaxation than trying to get it finished by a deadline.

It's 3' high solid limestone.

Thanks for looking.

In these photos I'm using a tooth chisel to smooth out the rough shape made from the point chisel.

Here's the really roughed out area done with a point chisel.

Well my hat is off to you!

I did a little stone work in college, not a forgiving medium. Looking forward to seeing your progress on this.

Thanks.

I worked some on the head, and I'm starting to refine the chest and shoulder area.

Wow, looking great so far. Anubis is the coolest Egpytian god by far, can't wait to see how he turns out! :thumbsup

Probably you remember that I love your sculpts, the Egyptian culture and that I envy your skills... If not, this is a reminder!!!:D
Awesome work (as usual):cool

Very cool stuff.

How big is this? THere's nothing in the background for scale.

Also, any recommendations on getting into stone carving? A basic set of tools perhaps?

Nick

I'm starting on the head now, so I'm in the process of making a clay maquette for reference since there's no room for mistakes on the stone piece.
