I have just bought a nice bit of grill for my SPFX ANH Vader and was wondering what is the colour of the grills (top and bottom) and whether the paint is matt or gloss? Any advice would be appreciated.

Being busy and confused, this may be wrong, but I'd say: not painted, just metal.

This stuff is steel ( of the slightly rusting kind ) so the brightness is not a problem. So gun metal and not black seems to be the way to go.

It's the same colour as the actual material so an aluminum, silver steel type of colour and some parts are rusty, mainly from the back, some paint is fractionally on parts of the ANH mesh additionally but it's not very consistent. And it's not brand new stuff, so shiny is wrong.
As someone mentioned above I have seen many people tone the mesh colour down by either painting it a dark grey, dark steel or Gunmetal.
Just stay away from too shiny, all black is not accurate :thumbsup

Also if you using untreated steel it will tarnish on its own naturally :thumbsup

Personally I wouldn't do gunmetal although you can get away with it. Both mesh mouth and chin are the same colour.

If you're gonna paint it... then go for a steel look, like aluminum and then give it a thinned wash of black and then wipe it off - this should take some of the shine away from the metal paint and make it look aged.

Here's a quick image of the mesh I got from Kurtyboy. I think I will give it a quick wipe with WD40 and then wax it.
