Andy's Bible Replica

MAKE BELIEVE

Master Member
Hi

As new on this forum the first prop I'd like to share with you is the last one I made (Andy's Bible from that great movie called "The Shawshank Redemption"). Sadly I didn't find the exact same version as the one Frank Darabont used on the movie but it's an Original King James bible. If you have the time, pls tell me what you think.
Thanks

Very nice work. You inspired me to do the same.

Not long after the warden deprived us of his company, I got a postcard in the mail. It was blank, but the postmark said Fort Hancock, Texas. Fort Hancock... right on the border. That's where Andy crossed. When I picture him heading south in his own car with the top down, it always makes me laugh. Andy Dufresne... who crawled through a river of **** and came out clean on the other side. Andy Dufresne... headed for the Pacific.....Red

Nice to finally see someone chop it up. I hope to do mine soon (about seven years over due!).

Now find an accurate rock hammer if you will. I tried. For many years. And failed...

Hi Kurt

You somehow inspired me to go on with this task. About the hammer that's another big story - it'll be difficult to find a SA one and once you actually never see the hammer inside the bible on the movie I decided to do mine wihout the hammer.
Last time I asked, you were on the process of making the newspaper front page. How is it coming?

Newspaper page has been long completed but there apparently is not a place on earth that will print on newsprint for anything less than 500 or 1000 copies.

And my attempts to find someone here that has access to a wide format printer/plotter failed miserably.

I tried. I tried again. I tried again x 20. I failed.

Have you asked Jedifyfe to help print front page only?

I have access to a 44" printer at work. I might be able to tape newsprint to a heavier cardstock, run it through, then trim off the excess newsprint (where the tape was).

I have some aged newsprint at home, so I might try it next week to see if I can get it to work.

I've looked all over for a hammer and could not find one that would be close enough to the one Andy uses
Here's my attempt and some screen caps

Bumping this old thread. I got my hands on the correct bible, but due to age, the purple ribbon broke off. Now I have two questions:
1. What do you guys think about the ribbon? In the movie it's sometimes purple, sometimes black.
2. Does anybody kow where to get the correct 9mm purple ribbon to replace the broken one? I order 2 rolls of ribbon already but colors are not 100% correct... Replacing the ribbon is not a big deal, just open up the book behind the pages and glue in the new one. Ready. But getting the correct ribbon is a pain in the...

If somebody has a direction to where to get the exact correct 9mm ribbon, let it know here!

Stores that sell sewing stuff don't have those ribbons? If not with that measurement try someone that works on book bidding
As to the ribbon I'd go for black

Mmm, I could also go for both colors and don't glue in the ribbon. I now have a purple one (slightly different) color put in place without gluing, and it stays put rather well. With a bit of a pull I can get it out. Off course, black is black. Always the correct color ;-). But in this scene (when he gives the Bible back), it's clearly purple:

I'm a purple fan personally, but there were definitely 2 different bibles used:

I guess if you plan on cutting out the rock hammer spot, go black. If not, purple :)

It seems like a lot of "exact color" quests for props are often haunted by changes in lighting, filters, and other production variables. I think if it appears purple obviously enough then there's no reason you can't assume that the "black" look is simply the way the purple ribbon looks under certain conditions.

But the only thing that can put a stop to pages-long arguments is the actual prop. Han Solo's Hoth coat being blue or brown comes to mind. Thank god that's over.
