According to the newest trailer, its the activation button. So... That seems to be canon now.

IIRC, in one of the Expanded Universe novels they came up with the concept of "Force activated" lightsabers; i.e., sabers that don't have an on/off switch and can only be activated by those who are Force sensitive.
