Amazing Spider Man 2 screen print costume attempt...

'Oh yea, I think Oracle's suit is gorgeous the way it is. It's just that he asked for feedback, and if he's going for accuracy (which he's certainly done with the techniques, pattern, and zippers) then the colors are quite a bit different from the screen-used pieces.'... Totally Lunaman!
cheers for the feedback. And yes screen printed spandex... Give me a few day, now gona take in what Lunaman has said and go buy navy blue fabric and darken my inks!! See you crazy kids soon! ;-)

is there anyway to get the "brick" effect without having it printed? maybe layering a slightly darker mesh material on top? just curious, i want to make a suit and want a more 3-d feel and look to it than some if the suit i've seen

As far as I am aware its totally possible but I'm pretty sure others out there have tried and failed... let us know how you get on 'shahid'.
In other news, new inks (for mixing my own shades) came today and new (darker) fabric should be here tomorrow :-D

Once again, gorgeous clean work. Once again, though, the brickwork on the film suit in the blue sections is darker and greyer (and more reflective) than the fabric. You're in the right wheelhouse with the fabric color.

I don't think anyone would be mad if you made a suit with the current fabric and ink setup, since it's gorgeous (and similar to the CGI suit) but I'd reconsider the ink color if you want it to look like the suit used on set.

Looks great, though I gotta agree with Lunaman, but you are definitelly getting closer oracle1982 :thumbsup

Okay kids, so I tried this with the first movie and with the more practice the happier i was with the outcome.

Let me know what you think, questions and comments ALL welcome!

Cheers for taking the time out to look!

i want one :)
that is amazing work are you going to screen print the webs and spiders as well?

At some point I'm going to attempt to mil the webs and cast it latex/rubber with the front spider attached. I don't know why but I have the urge to use the same red fabric for the back spider as the costume it's self.... Thinking of doing a layer of latex on the back of the fabrics, set and cut, then apply to the costume with latex again!? What do we think?

I think if all goes to plan you will be rich lol love the sound of it all

The only part I disagree with you on this is the "greyer" portion of the statement. The only thing that makes it look lesser in saturation is a combination of a few things. One being the color of the screenprint ink. But wait, I'll share additional thought on that in a moment. Second being the glossiness of that ink. Third being the source of the lighting, type of lighting (direct, ambient, bounced, etc), and intensity and temperature or color of the light (which will also affect fabric color). Then consider quality of reference photos we're getting from the shoots and the color reproduction accuracy of those cameras, many which may have been shot by third parties in uncontrolled and highly variable outdoor environments (direct sunlight vs cloud-filtered).

In the case of this suit, if it were me, I would make the screen printing the same color as the fabric on the blue areas. A respectably dark, but still noticeable navy blue. But I'm quite sure in the case of the movie suit that this is how they are achieving the effect. The lighting will solely determine just how much shine creates the amount and locations of shine in the suit and affect the color of the screenprinting as it looks in photos and videos. A more simplified example of this is the Raimi symbiote suit. It's all black, both fabric and screening, but the look of the pattern work is all determined by light reflection. The brighter and more direct the lights, the lighter the screening will look.

On a sidenote, I have reason to believe that the brickwork on the red fabric is dye-sublimated a darker red as it shows less in areas exposed to more light.

As someone who was actually playing with this idea before I started work on a dye-sub, I actually went a picked out some fabric samples to try and achieve that effect with the layered mesh. Wasn't to fond of how it looked on a 4" by 4" square...

Oracle, this is looking really awesome so far! While we're on the subject of saturation, it looks to me that the base blue that they are using in the film suit is slightly less so than the fabric you've got there. A screen print closer to clear on a less saturated blue could work out :) Definitely subscribing to this thread as I think that you're going to end up nailing this!
