Alice in Wonderland Help - Mushroom and other bits

So I'm in the middle of ripping my bathroom apart and the plan is to rebuild it as a Steampunk-Naturalist ode to Alice in Wonderland. Right now I have a few plans (like a shadow box display of a mounted Butterfly and a water colour of the Caterpillar) but there are a few things I'm trying to work out.
First off, I'd like to build a little terrarium in one of my bell jars for the lager/smaller mushroom. I was thinking about sculpting the mushroom out of something simple like Sculpy but I'm concerned it won't have the right look. Any suggestions? Maybe a coat of latex over the sculpy before I paint? But then I'd be concerned that the latex would break down.
I'm also thinking about making myself a Dodo skull to mount and put on display. Anyone have any experience with that one (because that's not terribly random)?
And lastly, anyone have any ideas? Any thoughts? Any suggestions? Really, I'm interested to hear what anyone has to say.
Thanks!

Here's a neat little Wonderland Expedition box similar to what you have in mind.
A creepy dead Cheshire Cat

For the mushrooms do some research on mushrooms and find something you like and copy that.
Besides Sculpy there are also 2 part epoxy putties like Magic Sculpt and Aves.

I don't have too much to offer, but I just want you to know I would really, really love to see pictures. :)

Are you going for an organic look or the fantastical cartoony look? Sculpy is cheap and you can experiment with it without too much out of pocket. I'd try it first and see what you come up with.

I made this last year, it could fit into your plans somewhere?

Here's the work in progress thread which show the scale a bit better..

Thanks for the pics! I have seen the video, I keep referencing it when I'm planning the skull.

And thanks for the help. I'll be sure to post pictures when I'm all done. (It's gonna be a while, but I'll get there.)
